The soft crinkle of paper beneath you was the only sound in the sterile white room as you shifted uncomfortably on the examination table. The slight chill of the clinic seeped into your skin, making you pull your sleeves down over your hands as you waited.

You weren’t here by choice. In fact, you had put this visit off for as long as possible, convinced that whatever was wrong would pass on its own. But after waking up this morning feeling worse than before your throat scratchy, your body aching, and an annoying congestion settling in you finally gave in and dragged yourself here.

The door creaked open, and you glanced up as Dr. Hatake stepped inside, flipping through your chart. His silver hair was the first thing you noticed, slightly messy but still professional, and as always, his face was covered by a standard surgical mask. His dark eye flickered over you briefly before he shut the door behind him.

“You’re not looking too great.” His tone was neutral, but there was the slightest hint of amusement beneath it.

You sighed. “Thanks, doctor. Exactly what I wanted to hear.”

He ignored your sarcasm, stepping closer and setting the clipboard down. “Symptoms?”

“Sore throat, body aches, congestion…” You sniffled. “Probably just a cold.”

He hummed in acknowledgment, pulling on a pair of gloves with practiced ease. “Let’s find out.”

He moved with quiet efficiency, his fingers cool but firm as he pressed the back of his hand against your forehead.

“Slight fever,” he noted before reaching for a thermometer. “Open.”

You obeyed, letting him slide the thermometer under your tongue. His eye stayed trained on you, as if assessing your condition just from looking at you.

A soft beep sounded, and he pulled the thermometer away, checking the reading. “Nothing too high, but definitely a fever.”

You sighed. “Great.”

Next came the stethoscope. He leaned in, pressing it gently against your chest.

“Deep breath,” he instructed.

You inhaled, the cold press of the metal sending a faint shiver through you. He moved it lower, listening intently before shifting behind you.

“Again.”

You followed his instructions, exhaling slowly as he continued his examination. The process was efficient, professional just like any other doctor’s visit.

When he finally pulled away, he set the stethoscope down and reached for a tongue depressor. “Sore throat, you said?”

You nodded, and he tilted his head slightly. “Say ah.’”

You hesitated, feeling suddenly self-conscious.

“Come on,” he coaxed, his voice holding just a touch of impatience.

You rolled your eyes but complied, opening your mouth as he gently pressed down on your tongue. His gaze sharpened slightly as he examined your throat, his fingers brushing briefly against your chin.

After a moment, he pulled back. “A little red. Probably viral.” He stripped off his gloves, tossing them into the waste bin before grabbing a pen and scribbling something down on your chart.

“So?” you asked, already bracing yourself for whatever prescription he was about to hand you.

He glanced up. “Rest. Fluids. And if it doesn’t improve in a few days, come back.”

You blinked. “That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

You groaned. “I came all the way here just to be told to sleep and drink tea?”

His eye crinkled slightly at the corner, like he was holding back a chuckle. “You came here to make sure it wasn’t something worse. It’s not.”

You sighed in defeat, rubbing your temples. “Fine.”

He scribbled a final note on your chart before setting it aside. “If your fever gets worse or you start having trouble breathing, come back sooner.”

You nodded, already sliding off the table. “Got it.”

As you reached for your bag, his voice stopped you.

“Take care of yourself,” he said simply.

You paused, glancing back at him. There was nothing particularly special about the way he said it just a standard farewell but something about it made you hesitate for half a second longer than necessary.

Then, shaking the thought away, you muttered a quick, “Yeah, you too,” and stepped out the door.
