The sun dipped below the horizon, casting the world in a dim, orange glow. A soft breeze swept through the clearing, but the air was thick like something pressing down from above, heavy and suffocating.
Tails sat at his workbench, his hands frozen mid task. He was staring at a circuit board he hadn’t touched in over an hour. His mind was elsewhere, following the spiraling thoughts that had gripped him ever since Sonic’s behavior had started to shift.
He couldn’t put his finger on it but something was terribly, wrong. Sonic had always been the energetic, unstoppable force. Even when facing great danger, he’d never faltered. But now…. Sonic looked so exhausted.
And Tails couldn’t fix it. Not by tinkering with gadgets, not by building a new invention. This wasn’t something a machine could solve.
Sonic had been seeing things, and hearing things. Not just only in his dreams, but when he was awake. The moments when Sonic’s eyes glazed over, when he looked at Tails as if he were a stranger, and then there were the night terrors. Sonic wasn’t the same.
“Tails?” Amy’s voice broke through his thoughts, soft but filled with concern.
He looked up to see her standing near the door, arms crossed, her expression tight.
“I… I don’t know what to do,” she said. her voice shaking. “This isn’t like him, this isn’t just stress or exhaustion. Something’s happening to him.”Tails swallowed, turning his gaze back to the workbench. “I know… I’ve been trying to figure it out. But I just don’t get it. I can’t find anything wrong with his health. No physical injuries, no issues with his brainwaves. But he’s still… so drained looking.”
Knuckles leaned against the wall, his arms crossed, scowling as he stared out the window into the lowering Sun. “You think he’s losing his mind? I’ve known Sonic a long time, but this…. this is something else. Something’s in his head, I know it.”
“Maybe it’s not just in his head,” Amy whispered. “What if it’s something he can’t control? Like a new villain"
Tails frowned, his mind racing. “The more I think about it… I don’t think this is just stress or trauma. It’s not like anything we’ve seen before. It’s… deeper. Something he’s trying to block out, but it’s coming back, piece by piece.”
Knuckles raised an eyebrow. “What are you saying, Tails?”
Tails hesitated. The words were stuck in his throat. “What if whatever is happening to Sonic… has to do with something from his past?”
Amy took a step forward, her face pale. “You mean… something he’s forgotten? Something buried deep inside him?”
Tails nodded, his fingers gripping the edge of his workbench. “He’s been seeing things things that don’t make sense, and it’s not just dreams. It’s like he’s remembering fragments of something.... Something awful....”
Amy’s heart sank. “What do you mean? Something awful? What happened to him, Tails?”
“I don’t know,” Tails admitted, frustration creeping into his voice. “But whatever it is… it’s causing his mind to break down. He’s seeing things that don’t belong in this world. He’s hearing voices, hearing things that can’t possibly be there.”
Knuckles’ gaze grew intense. “You think this is tied to his past, to something he’s buried away? We all know Sonic doesn’t like to talk about his childhood. But if this is something he’s forgotten… then why is it coming back now?”
Tails ran a hand through his fur. “I don’t know. Whatever this is, it’s psychological. Emotional. Something’s eating away at him, and I don’t think it’s going to stop until we figure it out.”
Amy clenched her fists. “Then we need to talk to him, we need to get him to face whatever it is. We can’t just keep waiting for him to get worse.”
Knuckles turned toward the door, his expression grim. “And what if he’s too far gone already? What if he won’t listen to us?”
Tails shook his head, his eyes filled with determination. “No. Sonic needs us. Whatever’s going on with him, he can’t fight it alone.”
Amy stepped up beside Tails, her voice soft but strong. “So, we confront him? We find out what he’s been hiding.”
Knuckles let out a sharp breath, his arms folding. “Fine. But if he’s as far gone as we think, we might have to drag him out of it. Whatever it takes.”
The three of them stood in tense silence, the weight of the situation pressing down on them. The sun had completely vanished, leaving only the faint glow of the moon and the cold night air. The world outside felt strange, unfamiliar, like something was just waiting for them to make a move.
Amy turned to Tails. “Where do we start?”
Tails hesitated, then spoke softly. “I think we need to go to Sonic’s house. Hopefully he tells us what is happening.."
Knuckles clenched his fists. “Let’s go then. Time’s running out.”
The trio set out under the dim light of the moon, walking in silence. The path leading to Sonic’s house felt longer than usual, the shadows of the trees stretching out like claws in the night. Tail's thoughts kept drifting back to the possibility that whatever was haunting Sonic, whatever was coming for him, had roots in something tragic — something dark from his past.
And he feared that whatever it was, they might not be able to pull Sonic back from it.
As they reached the edge of Sonic’s property, the silence deepened. Not a single sound. No chirping crickets, no rustling leaves. Just an eerie stillness hanging in the air. Tails felt it, a chill that crawled along his skin.
Amy swallowed. “It’s too quiet.”
Knuckles looked around, his eyes narrowing. “I don’t like it. Something’s wrong.”
The house loomed ahead, dark and silent. Sonic’s usually warm, welcoming home now felt cold, its windows darkened with the weight of some unknown force pressing against it.
Tails stepped forward, his breath shaky. “Let’s find him.”
But as they reached the door, the faintest whisper echoed through the air.
A voice, barely audible.
“I’m sorry...”
Amy froze. “Did you hear that?”
Tails nodded, his heart hammering in his chest, but he didn't say a word, he just wanted to help his brother.
They all exchanged a look, before Knuckles pushed open the door.
