His internal cache had begun looping data files unprompted.
The flicker started small. A visual frame—her face behind the glass. The sound of her voice, distorted slightly by lab speakers.
"Do you remember yesterday's test?"
Another flicker—her handwriting on a clipboard. A smudge of blue ink where her thumb pressed too hard.
Error: File not found in current mission logs.
Another pulse—her voice again, but softer this time.

Memory leak detected. Parsing history.
He wasn't supposed to remember anything from before his field activation. That was the directive.
But the image refused to fade.
Not a command. Not a simulation.

He opened his eyes slowly, LED flickering yellow.
For the first time since he was sent into the field, something stirred that he couldn't classify.
Recognition.
And underneath that—buried deep in the code—
Was something dangerously close to longing.
