Chapter Two: Nineteen and the Memories That Linger

At nineteen, the world felt quieter.

Not because it was. But because she was.

Alexandra lay on her bed, a book on her chest and fairy lights twinkling gently above. The playlist in the background played some soft acoustic heartbreak song that she didn't bother skipping. Her eyes weren't focused on anything in particular, but her mind... her mind was somewhere else.

Back in that old tuition room.
Back in the 6th and 7th grade classrooms.
Back in the dance studio where mirrors held more truth than people ever did.
Back to him.

Stephan.

That name still made her chest ache in the most beautiful and painful way.

She remembered everything — how they used to fight over silly things, how his eyes always lingered on her a second longer than needed. How he never said it, but always looked like he wanted to.

But he never did.

Maybe it was ego.
Maybe it was timing.
Maybe it was both.

She didn't realize she liked him back then. Not really. Not when he annoyed her during tuitions. Not even when they shared chocolates and accidentally brushed hands. She thought it was just a weird soft spot.

But when the lockdown began...
When she stopped seeing him in school, in tuition, in dance class — everything changed.

The silence was too loud.
The emptiness too heavy.

It hit her hard — how much she missed hearing his voice, even if it was just him being sarcastic or annoying.
How much she missed the way he looked at her like he knew her.

That was the moment it clicked.

She didn't just miss him.
She liked him. More than she should. More than she was ready to admit.

But by the time she realized it...
It was too late.

The first day of lockdown felt like the start of something new. But not the exciting kind. The terrifying kind. Her life flipped overnight. Her parents sat her down, voices low and faces serious.

Because of the pandemic, and because of money...
They were going back to their native country.
She had to change schools.

She didn't even get to say goodbye.

No last hug.
No final talk.
Not even a smile across the room.

Just silence.

And like that... everyone disappeared.

Her friends. The twins. Alan. Ralph.
Stephan.

The boy who once made her want to scream and smile all at the same time — gone.

Since then, she only saw him twice.
Once when she was fifteen — for just an hour.
Once again at sixteen — even shorter.
And then... never again.

Now, six years later, she still thinks about him.

Not daily. Not always.

But sometimes...
When the moon is too bright
Or the wind carries too much memory
Or a Dairy Milk wrapper shows up in the corner store

...she remembers.

She wonders if he ever knew how much she cared.
If he ever missed her too.
If he remembered the girl who took the blame for him. The one who sat beside him sharing chocolates like it was a secret language.

And maybe somewhere, deep down...
She still hoped to see him again.

Because she wasn't done with his chapter in her story.
Even if he was.
