"Bittersweet sixteen suddenly"
The news were eating at Cassie by now. Yes, she was excited, but keeping it from everyone—especially Lynn— was hard. Extremely hard.
She knew she would have to face it eventually, like, she was going down to visit Dallas in two weeks. Maybe she shouldn't tell Lynn? Whats the point if she doesn't even like the academy. Obviously, she knew she had to tell her, but for now she was just trying to make up excuses.
It sucked, she was stressed out, angry, tired, but also extremely excited. What made her heart hurt even more was seeing how careful Lynn was around her, as if she was purposefully saying as little as possible in fear of saying anything that would set her off.
After being pressured by her Merstone friends, she finally texted Lynn that Saturday.
Me
Hey Lynn
Can I come over
We have to talkLynn❤️
Dont scare me
Yeah come over anytime
Dad is making dinnerCassie closed her phone and put her shoes on. Usually it would only take her 8 minutes to walk to the Loud house, but due to her nervousness, she used 15 instead. Every possible outcome was swirling in her head. Maybe today was the day she would get dumped.
When she reached the house, her stomach twisted, and she didn't even knock. After six months, it had become routine to just walk in.
She was greeted by Luan popping out from behind the door with her puppet. Cassie had never been able to get used to the creepy thing, no matter how many times she saw it.
"Oh, hey, Cassie!" Luan grinned, holding the puppet in her face.
"Hey, Luan... is Lynn here?" Cassie glanced around, her nerves on edge.
"Oh, yeah, she's upstairs."
"Thanks." Cassie nodded, not bothering to stop for small talk as she made her way up the stairs. Her heart was pounding so loudly in her ears it nearly drowned out the sound of her footsteps. She paused in front of Lynn's door, staring at the knob for what felt like an eternity. She took a deep breath, and with shaking hands, she turned it.
Lynn was on her bed, her iPad in hand, her face lit up in the glow of the screen. Lynn didn't even look up at first.
"Lana, get out—" She stopped, her eyes meeting Cassie's. "Oh, sorry, Cass. Didn't know it was you."
Cassie forced a small smile and made her way to the edge of the bed, her hands twisting in her lap.
"So, what's the big news?" Lynn asked, finally putting down the iPad, her tone lighter, trying to sound more casual than she felt. Cassie exhaled shakily. She could barely get her words out. The nerves in her stomach had twisted into something heavier now, like a weight in her chest. The last time she'd felt this nervous was when they met at the tree and got together.
"Well..." She hesitated, trying to steady her breath. "Something came up recently."
Lynn tilted her head. "Uh-oh. You're not breaking up with me, are you?" she asked with a teasing smile, but it didn't quite reach her eyes.
Cassie shook her head quickly, but the words felt like they were stuck in her throat.
"No! I—no, of course not. It's not like that at all. It's just..." Cassie rubbed her forehead in frustration. "You know our tournament in Illinois, right?"
