MAISIE

Maybe the creepy part was me watching him sleep.

But you don't understand.

Have you ever heard the saying that if you love something, you're supposed to let it go.

If it comes back to you, it's yours?

Well what if that thing that left hurt you beyond measure?

And what if inspite of that you still did the most stupid thing you could think of and risked your life and future career by letting him escape.

The Kane I saw last must have known that I didn't really take away his memories.

And I know for a fact that I didn't. Something like that isn't exactly the kind of thing you don't remember doing.

But I wanted him to have a chance.

Sometimes people lived their lives in the most unfair of circumstances.

That's why when I found out Kane was a traitor, I couldn't bring myself to despise him the way everyone thought I should have.

Because that's the thing, everyone else didn't know him.

They knew him as the trouble making kid who came to the Gilbert academy as an unregistered looking for his even more scandalous sister.

They didn't know the Kane who had told me about the endless rotations of Foster homes him and Abby had moved into.

How some were so bad that they decided living on the street and taking their chances would be better.

I stared at him knowing I was probably the only one who knew how much he secretly despised fire...

I jumped when I heard the door to my room open.

I turned and saw Tae walk in.

He sighed as he looked over at Kane.

"I thought we said he'd take the floor, Mase." He spoke.

I turned back to look at Kane, his now clothed back to me thanks to Tae who I forced to spare some of his clothes.

His breathing was still steady indicating he was still asleep.

"Don't start, please." I whispered, gesturing for him to join me closer to the door.

Tae rolled his eyes.

"Riley's still in the gym." He explained.

I turned watching Kane.

"I gotta give a brief to the team after so she's gonna take next shift."

"Did you hear me, Mase?"

I turned to Tae. "What?"

He rolled his eyes and took a step forward snapping a finger in my face. "Earth to Maisie. We have more pressing matters than you ogling over the pyromaniac over there."

"Don't call him that." I immediately hissed at Tae. I sighed as I looked back at Kane's sleeping form.

He had always been doomed to be judged for who he was.

But Tae was right. As chaotic and crazy as this all was, my sister was still missing.

She was my first priority.

"Mase." Tae's voice was gentler and more serious. He placed a hand on my shoulder and looked me right in the eye. "Don't get attached."

I got a sharp sense of dejavu. Mikayla telling me the exact same thing when Kane first entered my life.
