The air of Bonesborough hit her like a half-forgotten dream—familiar, sharp, and tinged with something sour.
Amelia stepped off the rusted transport platform, boots caked in dust and travel grime. Same cobbled roads. Same floating lanterns bobbing lazily overhead. Same sketchy vendor screaming about “soul-slimming smoothies.” The Boiling Isles hadn’t changed much.
But she had.
Her coat hung heavy on her shoulders, weighed down with more than just the satchel strapped across her chest. That place—the boarding school Odalia had forced her into—had taken a lot from her. What she came back with wasn’t much: a few battered notebooks, some spell circles etched into her cuffs, and a temper even shorter than it used to be.
She didn’t send word. No scrolls, no glyph-messages. Just walked the streets she used to storm down, heading home.
Blight Manor stood on the hill like a beast trying to remember how to roar. But it was... different. The ominous glow was warmer now. The dead vines that once curled around the gates were trimmed. The wards didn’t activate when she stepped near.
Not even a spark of resistance.
She pushed open the doors and stepped inside.
And froze.
The interior was nothing like she remembered.
It was still the same house—but lived in now, softened around the edges. A pile of board games sat under a couch that definitely didn’t used to be purple. Photos lined the hallway—pictures of Luz and Amity tangled up in some chaotic adventure, Edric and Emira casting glitter hexes at each other, Camila trying to hug a very confused Hooty. On the wall above the fireplace hung a framed mugshot: Odalia Blight. Eyes narrowed. Numbered placard crooked. Someone had drawn a mustache on it.
Amelia stared at that for a long moment.
“About time you showed up.”
The voice pulled her back. She turned.
Amity stood at the top of the stairs, barefoot in striped socks and an oversized hoodie with a faded bat monster on the front. Her hair had grown longer, dyed lavender at the ends, a soft glow around her fingers where her magic still hummed from something recent.
She looked... brighter. Softer. Older. Happier.
And that stung.
“Hey,” Amelia muttered.
Amity’s face twisted, lips trembling—then she bolted down the stairs.
The hug was immediate, tight and clumsy. Amelia stumbled a little before catching her balance.
“You absolute jerk,” Amity mumbled into her shoulder. “You didn’t even warn us.”
“Didn’t think I needed to.”
“You didn’t. But I would’ve... I dunno, cleaned or something.”
Amelia snorted softly. “This place is cleaner than my old dorm.”
They pulled apart, and Amity looked her over with those golden eyes.
“What happened to you?”
“You already know.” Amelia’s voice dropped. “Odalia happened.”
“Yeah,” Amity whispered. “But she’s gone now. And you’re home.”
Amity’s scroll buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out, glancing down at the message and her smile widening.
Luz: Coming over tomorrow with my sister btw.
Amity: Perfect. My sister just came back too. They can meet.
Luz: Oh, awesome! See you then.
I love you!
Amity: Love you too!Amity tucked her scroll away, eyes lighting up with a mix of excitement and something else. She turned back to Amelia.
“Guess what?” Amity grinned, tugging her sister toward the couch. “You get to meet my girlfriend and her sister tomorrow.”
Amelia raised a brow, clearly trying to hold back a smirk. “Your girlfriend, huh?”
Amity gave her an exasperated look. “Don’t make it weird. You have to meet her now. Luz is... something else.”
“Uh huh,” Amelia muttered, leaning back into the couch as Amity sat next to her. “I’m sure she’s a real piece of work.”
Amity snorted, shoving her sister’s shoulder. “I’m serious. But anyway, let me tell you everything. We’ve got time.”
Amelia blinked. “Everything? What, like what happened to you? Is this some ‘sit-down’ moment?”
“No, no. I’m talking about everything you’ve missed—all the crazy stuff.” Amity pulled her knees up to her chest and began. “First off...”
And just like that, Amity started telling her sister everything—about the adventures with Luz, the chaos, the people she’d met, the battles fought, and how much had changed in the time they’d been apart. For once, Amelia didn’t interrupt. She just listened.
