Chapter 12: The Ranking System

I spend a lot of time on the wattpad subreddit, it's where I hang out (even though I should be writing, but I'm not. Shh, don't tell my big sister.) And I see the same question being asked, but I'm not seeing a solid answer in the comments.

That question is "How does the wattpad ranking system work?"

Now, understandable that the ranking system can be VERY confusing, considering you'll be getting bronze medals 9i'm using bronze as an example) In multiple tags even with such a low reading and voting count. So I did the one thing many people don't seem to do on Reddit, and I researched for you guys!

This is what I understood based on my research.

抖阴社区 employs a system called "YuenRank," which evaluates stories based on their popularity and engagement within specific genres and hashtags. The exact workings of YuenRank are proprietary, but several factors are believed to influence ranking.

Did I repeat the exact words from a website I stumbled upon in my research? Yes. Am I going to continue to repeat the exact words from said website? Yes, yes, I am. Because I didn't know how else to put it into words. (Confused in learning disability)

That website: fanficable.com (This is the source)

Here are a few factors we suspect they're looking at when crafting rankings:

-Percent New Daily Reads: The number of new reads your story receives each day compared to its usual daily reads. A significant increase can boost your ranking.

-Vote-to-Read Ratio: The number of votes (likes) your story gets relative to the number of reads.

-Comment-to-Read Ratio: The number of comments your story receives relative to the number of reads.

-Number of Times Added to Reading Lists: How often readers add your story to their reading lists.

-Number of Times Added to Private Libraries: Instances where readers save your story to their private libraries.

-Average Consecutive Read Time: The average uninterrupted time readers spend on your story.

-Percentage of Completed Reads: The proportion of readers who finish your story.

-Recent Updates: How recently your story has been updated or edited.

-Unique Readers: The number of distinct individuals reading your story.

Additionally, stories that are updated regularly tend to perform better, as the algorithm favours recent activity. However, adding new chapters to a story with many existing reads can lower the average reads per chapter, potentially affecting your ranking negatively.

If you're receiving bronze medals despite low read counts, it's possible that your story is performing exceptionally well in one or more of these engagement metrics, such as receiving a high number of votes or comments relative to its reads. This indicates strong reader engagement, which can elevate your story's ranking even without a large number of reads.

To further improve your ranking:

-Maintain Regular Updates: Consistently update your story to keep readers engaged and signal activity to the algorithm.

-Encourage Interaction: Prompt readers to vote and comment on your story, as these interactions can positively influence your ranking.

-Optimize Story Length: Aim for chapters between 1,500 and 3,500 words to maintain reader interest and minimize drop-off.

-Accurate Tagging: Use relevant and honest tags to attract the right audience and avoid misleading readers.

By focusing on these aspects, you can enhance your story's visibility and performance on 抖阴社区.

Please visit the website I gave for a deeper dive into how it works. But from what I've read (And repeated here), this seems to be the gist of it all.

Do I still understand how it works? Not really, but now at least I know roughly how it is done. And I hope you do too. :)
