The morning sunlight filtered through the large windows of the Tower, casting long beams of gold across the sleek, modern interior. The room was quiet, save for the low hum of the air conditioning and the occasional clink of coffee cups being set down on the counter. The Avengers' headquarters was busy, but there was a certain peacefulness this early in the day that made it feel more like a home than a base of operations.
Callie sat at the kitchen island, her hands resting on the table in front of her, her gaze flicking from one side to the other as she sorted through her belongings. Her fingers brushed over her work tablet, her sketchpad, and the various papers and tools scattered in front of her. The morning had been peaceful, and for once, she didn't feel like the weight of the world was hanging over her. That is, until she reached up to adjust one of her hearing aids-and found it missing.
She froze, her breath catching in her throat as her fingers searched her ear. Nothing. No little device, no familiar weight in her ear. She felt the sudden spike of panic shoot through her chest.
"Where the hell is it?" she muttered under her breath, her pulse beginning to race.
It wasn't just the hearing aid itself that caused the panic, though that in itself was enough to set her nerves on edge. It was the thought of being without it. She couldn't hear much without it-not clearly, not at all, really. The world would be muffled, distorted. Quiet.
She stood quickly, pushing the chair back with a scrape against the floor. Her eyes darted around the kitchen, scanning every corner, every surface. She opened the drawers one by one, not bothering to check what was inside before slamming them shut. Nothing. Her hands moved to her pockets, rifling through them even though she knew it wasn't there.
Her breathing quickened. She couldn't lose it. Not again.
"Callie?"
The familiar voice of Tony Stark interrupted her frantic searching, his footsteps echoing lightly as he approached. She turned toward him, her face flushed with frustration and panic.
"Tony, I've lost it," she said, trying to keep her voice steady. "My hearing aid. I can't find it."
Tony's brow furrowed in concern as he took in her wide-eyed look. "You can't find it?" He glanced around the kitchen, as if the small, high-tech device might be hiding somewhere obvious. "You sure you didn't drop it somewhere?"
Callie shook her head quickly, her hands trembling slightly as she fidgeted with the edge of the table. "I've looked everywhere. I was just wearing it this morning. It was right here, and now it's gone."
"Okay, okay. No need to panic," Tony said, his voice calm, though there was an unmistakable edge of urgency to it. "Let's retrace your steps."
"I don't even know where to start!" Callie snapped, her voice sharper than she intended. She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to calm the fluttering panic in her chest. "Sorry. I just-" She shook her head, frustration building inside her. "I can't-without it, I can't hear anything clearly, and if it's lost, then... then-"
"Hey," Tony said, cutting through her rising panic with his usual calm. "It's okay. It's just a hearing aid. We can find it." He took a step closer, his eyes softening as he studied her for a moment. "You don't have to do this alone."
Callie exhaled sharply, but she didn't pull away as Tony reached out, gently taking her shoulders to steady her. "Okay, I'm calm," she muttered, more to herself than to him. "Let's just... start again. Retrace my steps."
Tony nodded, offering a reassuring smile. "Exactly. First, let's check the lab. You were in there earlier, right?"
She nodded, grateful for his calm presence. The last thing she needed was to let the panic take over and shut everything down. She followed him into the lab, moving slowly, her eyes scanning the floor. Every step she took felt heavier, the weight of her deafness settling over her like a fog. Without her hearing aid, the world felt distant, detached. She felt cut off in a way that was more profound than she'd been in years.
