Rory Karine was sullen and silent and savage. Her very being, her very soul full of want and sick with a painful piercing kind of loneliness. For as long as she could remember she'd felt that exact way.
She was seven when she began having her dreams.
Dreams of infernos of fire, planets of ice and frost and always, always the dark shadow of death creeping towards her, a looming, snarling, vicious creature full of her own wretched foreboding. It would show her futures of other worlds, every world except her own. She'd wake sweating and shaking in the night, convinced she was going mad. She still hadn't completely ruled it out as a possibility.
Her parents were vague, frustratingly dim memory and she had ran away twice from the Lightwind Orphanage in Bestine, having no love for it and receiving none in return. So after numerous escape attempts and in order to survive out in the desert, Rory had taught herself to hunt and steal and hide. Whispers emerged about a child who was more wild thing than girl. She was only ten when she had first gained such an infamous reputation.
A hermit named Ben Kenobi found her a few years after her second great escape and for the first time she found herself cared for. He was her father in her own fragile hopeless way, which meant she kept as far away from as possible in the beginning but after a year took his words as sacred law. She would follow him to the end of the universe because he understood her and didn't leave nonetheless of her apparent eccentricities and troubles. Maybe this was because he had plenty of his own.
In the year of 0BBY, she meets an endearingly naive farmboy with the softest bluest eyes that she's ever seen. That is when Rory Karine learns that strangers can tie themselves to you with knots and embed themselves in your blood like holy wine. Luke Skywalker becomes the warmth on her skin, he burns - (not like the twin suns' harsh, blistering beams) but projecting a gentle ray of light.
That is when Rory Karine truly loves.
