Nicholas Pierce was raised to follow his father's orders without disobeying, and if he did ever disobey, his father wouldn't hesitate to kill him. Typically, when children are eighteen or nineteen years old and after they graduated high school, they'd move out and start their new life as a young adult. Live their life without their parents. Well, Nicholas didn't have that luxury, then again, he was raised to do the completely different things that people wouldn't dream of doing. He wasn't just raised like a soldier; no, he was raised like a killer. When he was twelve years old, that's when Alexander would start doing tests on his son. His own son, to see if he can be the next Phantom.

Imagine this, the Winter Soldier program where Bucky Barnes was in, but for Nicholas it was the Phantom program, where the younger boys that Hydra had kidnapped and or abducted would get tested, to become the next Phantom. Whoever would be the next Phantom, would be Phantom for the rest of their life, following orders that the Hydra superiors give them. So, for over ten years, Nicholas has been training to become the next Phantom, and no matter what he does, it is like his father isn't happy, nor has he ever been happy with Nicholas in the first place.

So, with Nick Fury being a close friend because Alexander and Fury are acqaintances as Alexander works for the Council, Nicholas obviously gets wind of the Avengers: initiative that Nick Fury is working about of bringing together a band of people who would potentially become the Avengers. 

Nicholas talked Fury into letting him join but under an alias, so that his father doesn't say anything. He wants to try to do good as he wants to make attempts to change his life around. And the only way to do that is by making sacrifices and taking risks. 

When he had seen a redhead, he immediately recognized her, and he couldn't keep his eyes off of her, no matter how hard he tried. He wouldn't admit it, but he fell for Black Widow as soon as he had laid his eyes on her, and he didn't stop there. It was like he had claimed Natasha Romanoff as his.

in which a forbidden love between nicholas and natasha begins, and neither of them wants to end it.
