I knocked on Asani's door.

"The kids with they granny. Bye," she said behind it, voice flat, no movement.

She was still mad about the shit I said last week. I knew it. Her tone alone told me I was on thin ice — if that.

"Bra, open this fucking door, girl," I said, rubbing one hand down my face. My other hand was full.

"The kids ain't here. You don't need to be here."

"I'm not finna talk to yo ass behind this door, so open it... or I'ma key yo shit."

Silence.

Then I heard the lock click, and she opened the door — didn't say nothing else, just turned and walked back toward the kitchen. Left me standing there like a stranger.

I stepped in and closed the door behind me.

"Here, bra," I said, putting the dog cage down on the floor. "Denim and Deuce said they wanted a dog for they birthday, so... I got it."

She came around the island slowly, arms folded. Looked at the cage like it was a bomb.

"And you couldn't have just texted me that?" she said. "You ain't have to bring the dog here."

"I don't like dogs," I said, sitting down on one of the stools. "You know this. The lil shit wasn't stayin' with me."

"Okay. Bye," she said, bending down and unlatching the cage. The puppy — little blue-nose pit — stumbled out and started sniffin' around.

"Where you get it?" she asked, still not looking at me.

"It's a him. And I bought him from somebody I know."

"Okay. Bye," she repeated, picking the pup up and letting him sniff her face.

"Asani, whatchu mad for?"

"I'm not mad," she said, eyes on the dog.

"Then why you actin' like this?"

"Actin' like what? I'm literally actin' like a co-parent. 'Cause we AIN'T together."

Her tone was dry but that emphasis on ain't cut deep.

"Sani, that's 'cause we not together."

"Duh. I know that, Kadeem. I'll text you about what we doin' for they birthday. You can go now," she said, still petting the pit like I wasn't even in the room.

"You finna blow me, bra," I muttered, taking my gun out my waistband and setting it on the counter beside me.

She looked up quick. "Nigga, what the fuck is you talkin' about?"

"You always takin' shit outta proportion. I ain't even mean it like that, shawty."

"There is no other way to mean it," she snapped. "We ain't together — like you said — so I can't be mad."

I stood up, feeling the heat rise in my chest.

"'Cause yo ass was tryna control who I talk to, Sani."

She rolled her eyes. "Kadeem, you literally stick yo hot ass in anything that got a pussy."

"Bra, stop playin' wimmie. I wasn't even tryna fw her — that's yo cousin. Ian no weird-ass nigga, bra."

"If I'm beefin' with a bitch and you sittin' there talkin' to her, that's embarrassing as fuck on my end, bro," she said, putting the dog down and standing straight up, arms crossed now.

"Nvm," I said, shaking my head. "Ian explainin' shit to you. I'm finna go kick it with yo opps and shit."

"You really playin' wimmie," I said, stepping up to her — inches away now, breathing the same air.

She didn't back up.

"See? You see how that shit line up, my nigga?" she said, eyes locked on mine. "You can talk to my opps, but if I do it — it's a problem."

I sighed, hands falling to my sides.

"Aight... I see where you comin' from. I ain't even think about it like that."

I reached for her waist, pulling her in gently.

"Yeah, 'cause you don't think," she said, but her voice softened just a little.

"You forgive me?" I asked, hands sliding down slow, gripping her ass.

"Nope," she said, biting her lip, tryin' not to smile.

"Mhm..." I hummed, leaning in, kissing her lips.

She kissed me back — soft, slow — but then turned her head quick.

"Unt uh. We ain't doin' this," she said, laughing.

I stayed close, hands still on her.

"But you kissed me back," I said, grinning.

"I got caught slippin'. That's all that was," she said, but she still hadn't moved away.

The dog barked once and jumped on her leg. She laughed again, brushing the pup off gently.

"Look at that," I said. "Even he tryna bring us back together."

"He just want attention. Just like you," she said, giving me a look.

I smiled, pulled her closer again.

"Maybe. But I'm tryna give it too."
