Chapter One-- Check-In & Check-Out Of My Life
~
I am still in the run down, old, cheap car that my mom bought for me on my eighteenth birthday. The tiny hotel was approximately three hours away from my house, with ten minutes left of driving. My Dachshund; Pickles is sleeping in the back seat with a couple of my bags. As the music in the car quietly hummed, the big glowing pink FARMINGTON INN sign showed that the hotel was closer than the gps said it was. The car turned left and then the small hotel came into sight. I parked the car and got Pickles and my bags and started inside.
I get out of the car and stare up at the building. I did not come here for another mental breakdown, what the hell did I just get myself into? The pet friendly hotel was not looking to friendly from the outside, but there is always a chance that the inside could be better.. right?
"This can't be right." I say, clutching my suitcase like it's the only stable thing I can rely on.
I tighten my grip on Pickle's leash and find myself walking towards the check-in counter. The bell rang as I walked in the door and the lady at the front desk sat up straighter, "Welcome to the Farmington Inn, how may I help you this evening?"
"I have a reservation for Sophie Elizabeth. I think it's on the second floor?" I stated as I watched her type on the computer.
The front desk lady took a long pause while she was looking at the computer, but quickly snapped back to life, "Alright! You're all set," She said as she handed me the bulky room key "Here are you're keys, room 206, and come to me down here if you need anything." She finished. I nodded and took the keys, and walked back outside to the stair cases.
"So much for the second floor," I said while grunting every couple steps.
Once me and Pickles got to the second floor I walked us to the door and unlocked it, the room wasn't too bad, it had a bed, bathroom, and microwave and mini fridge for a kitchen. That's when I heard something.
Water.
Someone's in here.
A stop walking so fast I could have gotten whip-lash. I quickly swing the door open and bolt out of the room, slamming the door on the way out. Once I'm back down stairs I slam my hands on the counter to the front desk, "Hey, so you gave me a room that's already occupied." I quickly rush out, breathing heavily.
"Uh no, that room is supposed to be empty." The lady at the desk said as she started to type more on her computer.
"Well, unless your plumbing 'Friends' is busy in my shower using his 'Herbal Essences shampoo', it's not empty."
"Oh, yea it looks like the last guy that was in there never checked out. That's who's in your room, so the system must've assumed—
"Well no shit." I said to her dryly, "Can you like- get him out?!"
"Uhm, how do you want me to do that? There's nothing we can do unless you get him out yourself-
"I don't care what you can and can't do!" I snap. "There's a half-naked man in my room."
"Lucky?" She offers, weakly still trying to find the light in the situation.
I give her a death glare that could curdle warm milk.
The lady stammers, clearly panicking under the heat of my glare. "Uh—hold on, let me get my manager."
The desk lady disappears into the back, leaving me alone at the counter with a half-eaten muffin with a fly swarming it, and a motivational poster that says, SMILE! HOSPITALITY IS CONTAGIOUS!
Lies.
Around one minute later, a woman in her hotel outfit thing with a name tag that reads Sherry emerges, holding a clipboard and absolutely zero patience.
"Hi. Sophie, right?" she says, already sounding bored. "So, we do see there's an active reservation on that room."
"Right. That would be me," I say slowly with a bit of sarcasm, trying not to scream. "But there's also a man in the room. Half-naked my I add!"
Sherry squints at her clipboard like it holds the secrets of the universe. "Well, technically he never checked out. And since you've already been assigned the room, there's nothing in our system preventing the overlap."
"I'm sorry—what?"
"You both have access to the room until the situation resolves," she says in a tone that clearly implies not my problem. "Maybe try knocking next time."
"Try—knocking?" I repeat with a scoff, deadpan. "On my own hotel room?"
Carol shrugs. "It's really a matter of communication." She looks at me like this is a game, and I'm the one losing- she's enjoying this too much.
"Sherry ma'am," I say, setting my bag down along with Pickles' leash with dramatic sigh, "he was in a towel, in my hotel room."
"I've heard worse," she mutters, then gestures vaguely toward the large stair case outside. "If you want a new room, we'll have availability... next Wednesday."
My jaw drops.
Next Wednesday?! This stay couldn't get worse.
But now I have two options,
One, Stay in the hotel room with a random man.
Two, Drive all the way back home, or sleep in the car.
None of them sounded amusing.
Or, Three, Sleep in the lobby next to a potted plant.
"Whatever," I say as I grab my things and head out the door for the second time now. I make sure to slam the door on my way out.
"Well, I guess I'm really doing this." I take a deep breath in, then let it out and start bringing all of my things back upstairs to the hotel room.
A.N
Towel Boy has made his first impression! Are we team hotel staff (team "option one") or team Sophie (team "get her the fuck out of there")?
Chapter two should be out soon!
