A/N: Do yall want g!p for this book or no??

The SUV was comfortably quiet, save for the hum of tires on pavement and the occasional ping from Beyoncé's phone. I sat in the passenger seat beside her, alert like always, scanning through the tinted windows. But inside, my focus wasn't where it should've been...not with her next to me.

She was on the phone, angled slightly toward the window, laughing low and easy. Her voice dipped into that flirty, velvet-soft tone that instantly set my nerves on edge.

I didn't know who she was talking to, but I hated the way she smiled. The kind of smile that made her eyes crease just a little. Whoever was on the other end of that call had her grinning like that.

Blushing, too.

I clenched my jaw and shifted in my seat, staring out the window to keep from looking at her. I knew I had no right...none at all...but knowing didn't stop the slow burn building in my chest.

She said something I couldn't quite hear, her voice low and teasing, then laughed again before hanging up. Her fingers lingered on her phone for a second before she finally set it in her lap. I could feel her looking at me.

"We've got that charity event tonight," she said, her voice a little softer now.

"Yeah," I replied, keeping my eyes straight ahead.

A pause.

"You okay?" she asked.

I finally glanced at her. She was studying me with those sharp, intuitive eyes that missed nothing.

"I'm good," I said flatly, turning my gaze back to the windshield.

She leaned back in her seat, arms folded across her body like she was trying to read the situation. Her eyes didn't leave me.

"You don't sound good."

I didn't respond. I couldn't without letting something slip...something I wasn't ready to admit, not out loud. So, I sat in silence, gripping my knee with one hand and swallowing back everything I wanted to say.

She didn't push.

But I felt her watching me for the rest of the ride, her silence saying more than any words could.

She knew.

And that made it worse.

The ballroom sparkled with candlelight and low jazz. A sea of black suits and glittering gowns flowed around us, champagne flutes in hand, all smiles and whispers. This crowd smelled of old money and newer scandals. I scanned the perimeter like I always did, alert and composed. But it wasn't the room I was really watching.

It was her.

Beyoncé looked unreal tonight. Hair up, skin glowing like moonlight, a fitted black gown that showed off every soft, impossible curve. She was working the room effortlessly...graceful, magnetic, untouchable. And I was just her shadow. Again.

"You always this stiff at parties?" Teyana's voice cut through the air, teasing.

I glanced over at her and cracked a small smile. "Sometimes."

Teyana looked good too—black satin tux top cropped to her waist, diamonds on her ears. She blended in like she belonged here. I was glad I invited her.

"Tuh," she smirked. "You only brought me so you wouldn't lose your mind watching her flirt all night."

I didn't deny it. Just took a sip of champagne and let the heat settle in my chest.

Teyana nudged me gently with her elbow. "She been lookin' at you every five seconds, you know."

I roll my eyes. "Mhm"
