The blast shook the walls, shattering light fixtures, sending glass and dust swirling in the sterile air. For a breathless moment, no one moved—rangers staggered, alarms blared louder, red lights spinning wildly. Then, like a second wave of shock, gunfire erupted from the left wing of the lab.
Bullets tore through the haze.
The attackers were rangers too—or at least dressed like them. Camouflage gear, combat boots, weapons standard issue—but they were firing on the others. Betrayal in uniform.
The original rangers, startled, took cover and began shooting back. It became impossible to tell who was who—friendly or foe, loyalties splintered in gunfire. The floor erupted in sparks and screams as bodies dropped left and right.
Sky was mid-struggle, being dragged by two armed rangers—when the chaos broke, they released him, spinning with their rifles to return fire. He stumbled, stunned, then caught his breath as instinct took over. The thought of Nani lying in blood resurfaced like a jolt to the heart.
He ran.
Past the chaos, past the bullets and screams, past smoke and flashing red lights—toward the corridor where Nani had been taken. The hallway pulsed with danger. But Sky's eyes locked on a figure moving at the far end, surrounded by a wall of men.
Dave.
Walking like he owned the warzone. Calm, assured, protected. His men flanked him in a tight diamond, clearing the path. And they were moving in the same direction Nani had been taken.
Sky's jaw clenched. His fists curled. He knew that look in Dave's eyes—ambition burning, too bright, too focused.
—
Minutes before,
Dew was in his room, waiting on his shift, watching the silent clock. Then the blaring alarm split through the walls like thunder.
His heart dropped.
He didn't need to check to know. He was already grabbing his gear, sliding on the vest, the belt, the rifle—every second heavier than the last. He ran. Past panicking scientists. Past shouting guards. But even as he sprinted, he knew—he was late.
As he reached the staircase overlooking the main lab chamber, he froze.
Below—Sky, screaming, cradling someone.
Dew's knees weakened.
Nani.
His white gown soaked in red, body limp, head lolling like a doll in Sky's arms. The chaos around had stopped—as if even time had knelt to grief. Sky's scream echoed like something ancient and breaking.
Dew grabbed the railing, his vision blurring. His chest heaved with silence. Is this it? Is this how it ends?
Tears fell fast and hot.
He hadn't even told Nani that he still loved him. That he always would.
Maybe it was his fault. Maybe if he hadn't confessed. If he hadn't run away when Nani said nothing back. If he'd just stayed...
Someone shouted—"He's alive!"
And like a switch flipped, Dew's body moved.
He ran.
—
Inside the emergency medical room, Nani was already laid on the table, surrounded by frantic doctors. His chest barely rose. The heart monitor beeped slow. A machine hissed with oxygen. Blood pooled beneath him.
Toby stood over the scene, arms crossed, his eyes unreadable.
"Inject the pheromone," he ordered flatly.
Dew burst through the doors. His eyes found Nani instantly.
"Nani..." His voice cracked.
Toby walked toward him calmly, almost detached. "He'll be fine."
Dew turned to him, eyes blazing with tears.
"You keep breaking your promise."
Toby blinked.
"I'm sorry," he said, quiet, almost genuine.
"More. Inject more. We need to kickstart his vitals," he snapped at the doctors.
Another figure stormed in—Dave.
"Move!" he roared, pushing past guards, his men flanking him with drawn weapons.
"What are you doing here?" Toby shouted, reaching for his gun.
Dave's men raised theirs first—locking Toby in place.
Dave ignored it all. His eyes were only on Nani.
"You did this on purpose," he snarled. "You didn't want me to succeed. That's why. You let this happen. If anything happens to Nani, I'll blow this entire building sky-high."
Toby was shoved backward, cornered by two of Dave's guards.
"Vitals aren't improving," a doctor yelled.
"They should. This is how he heals. The pheromone should trigger—" Toby stopped. His voice went hollow.
"It wasn't the pheromone," Dave muttered.
"What?" Dew asked, turning sharply.
"It wasn't the drugs. It was Sky," Dave said.
The room fell into stillness.
"What do you mean?" Dew asked, stepping closer.
Dave looked him straight in the eye. "Sky isn't just any alpha. He's special- so is his pheromone—it jumpstarts Nani's system like none other. You want to save your little lover?" His voice dropped into a growl.
"Then bring me Sky."
