Music above: Stay Gold - BTS
金継ぎ (Kintsugi - "joining with gold").
The quiet scratching of pencils on paper filled the room. Each of the six members were intent on their writing. This was a serious occasion, for now the members were to choose their band's name. Tatsuya sat cross-legged on the floor, his brow furrowed in concentration. Beside him, Aoto was sketching ideas in a notebook, occasionally glancing up to see the others' reactions. Hinata and Kōji were seated on the couch, whispering to each other, while Itsuki and Banri were focused on their own lists.
"Alright, let's hear what everyone has," Tatsuya said, breaking the silence.
"I've got one," Aoto said, looking up from his notebook. "Ukiyo. It means 'the floating world.' It's kind of poetic and represents the fleeting, beautiful moments we capture in our music. Plus, you know that in the Samurai era the entertainment houses were called Ukiyo."
Hinata nodded thoughtfully. "That's a good one, Aoto. I was thinking of Ikigai. It means 'reason for being' in Japanese. I think it captures the passion we have for our music."
Koji hesitated for a moment before speaking up. "I thought of Rakuyou. It means 'falling leaves,' like change and the beauty of letting go and continuing on."
A moment of silence followed his suggestion as each of them turned over all the yet mentioned options in their minds. The first to shake them from their considerations was Tatsuya, who was admittedly more concerned with actually choosing a name than what the name would be.
"Alright, any other suggestions before we vote?" Tatsuya asked.
Banri, who had been silent until now, spoke up. "How about Kintsugi? It means 'joining with gold,' as in the art of repairing broken pottery with gold. It can often symbolize resilience and finding beauty in sorrow."
The room fell silent yet again as the members considered Banri's suggestion. There was a certain depth and symbolism to the name that resonated with them.
" I like that," Itsuki said, breaking the silence. He spoke looking down at the floor, solemnly tracing a circle in front of him.
"I think it's perfect. We all have our struggles, but we still have to join together and make the best of it– something impactful if we can," Kōji added.
Tatsuya looked around at his bandmates, seeing the agreement in their eyes. "Alright, let's put it to a vote. 抖阴社区 down which name you're in favor of and drop it in the box."
Aoto raised his hand first.
"Wait, before we vote, I want to add something," he said. "The band isn't just about us. It's also about our listeners. After hearing Banri's suggestion, I want to add another reason outside of this group for why the name works well. Everyone has their own cracks and imperfections, you know. I hope that being willing to admit that we have our own scars can be really relatable and inspiring. Since it's a name that speaks to resilience and the glory and transformation of overcoming, it should be something our fans can connect with and be encouraged by."
Hinata's eyes lit up at Aoto's words. "You're right. It's not just about our journey, but also about how our music can help others through their tough times."
Tatsuya nodded. "Good point. A name that resonates with us and our fans is exactly what we need."
They all sat back for a moment, considering the significance of the name. One by one, each member wrote on their paper and dropped it in the box. Tatsuya shook the box gently, making sure the papers were mixed well.
