The cathedral doors blew open with a blast of cold wind.
Lucien raised his gun, heart pounding. Smoke crawled across the floor like living shadows.
And then... he stepped in.
Kael. Tall. Pale. Dressed in a long ash-gray coat that fluttered like it had its own heartbeat. His eyes were black, with silver threads moving inside them like galaxies.
"Lyra," he said, smiling. "I've missed you."
Lucien stepped in front of her. "You picked the wrong city, freak."
Kael didn't blink. "You think bullets will stop me?"
Lucien pulled the trigger.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
Kael didn't flinch. The bullets hung in the air, spinning.
"Cute," he said, flicking his wrist. The bullets dropped like stones.
Lyra pushed past Lucien. "Kael. Leave him alone."
"Come home," Kael said, voice like silk over steel. "Or I'll burn this world down around you."
Lucien grabbed her hand. "We're leaving. Now."
Lyra looked at him. "Are you sure?"
"Do it."
She raised her hand, whispering something in a language that didn't exist here. A light burst around them-blinding.
They vanished.....

Outside the city, deep in the woods...
Lucien stumbled, coughing, as the light faded. "What the hell was that?"
"Teleportation," Lyra said, breathing hard. "It drains me."
Lucien pulled her close. "You okay?"
"No. But I'll be worse if you leave me."
"I'm not going anywhere," he said.
She looked up at him. "You don't understand. Kael's not just a prince. He's a hunter. And I'm his prize."
Lucien grabbed her chin. "Not anymore."
Their lips met again-desperate and full of fire. She pushed him against a tree, her hands roaming fast, claiming him like she'd never get another chance.
He gasped against her skin. "You're not scared?"
"I'm terrified," she whispered. "But you make me feel alive."

Back in the city, Kael stared at the spot where they vanished.
He smiled. "Run, little star. I'll find you. And when I do, I'll kill him first."
