Chapter 18: Blood, Sweat, and Tears

Start from the beginning

"Well how long will that take?" Niall ask. He has finally stood up straight and started breathing normally. "He could be dead by the time that they find out! Just start pumping with the O crap. Or whatever the blood that works with everything."

"They can't do that. They have to save that for super-dire situations. Most of the time they use that on people with O- because that's the only blood that works with them. Because they don't know his blood type they can't start yet. It should only be like fifteen minutes the doctor said," I say to Niall trying to calm him down. He rolls his eyes and throws his hands in the air.

"So they are just going to let him die?! That's freaking ridiculous!" Niall yells again. Eleanor tries to calm him down but her tears inhibit her from doing so. She attempts to talk to him but all that comes out is her sobs. Niall eventually calms down enough and wraps his arms around her. He ends up calming her sobs into sniffles.

"Liam! Liam Payne!" A voice shouts from behind me. I reel around and look to the doors to the emergency room. A nurse in mint-green scrubs is standing in front of them. I nod my head at her and she waves me over with her hand. I speed walk over and Eleanor, Zayn, and Niall follow behind me.

"Yeah I'm Liam. What's up?" I say panicked and excited. Hopefully they have good news about Harry. She doesn't reveal anything to me and just says that the doctor needs me in Harry's room. I thank her and run around her into the building and down the corridor. I stop at Harry's room and look at the doctor holding a clipboard at the end of the bed.

"Oh Liam...and friends," he says looking to me then to the others behind me. I introduce them, and they all exchange smiles and handshakes. After that is done I look back at him expectantly. His face turns from pleasant to pained. I mentally cringed at the turn of emotion. This cannot be good.

"Well we have his blood type, but it isn't good. He is B-, which means he needs B- or O-. The hospital doesn't have any O- and the B- is dangerously low. We don't have enough to do the transfusion. If we did he'd lose too much blood for it to be effective." I look at him and shocked. My mouth slowly drops open. Is he saying Harry's going to die?

"W-what does that mean doctor?" Zayn says stepping next to me. I look at him and then back to the doctor waiting for his response. The look on his face hints that it won't be a good response.

"We searched the blood donor database but none showed up with either type," he says quietly. He looks down and takes a deep breathe. Deep breathes are never good. Especially in a hospital. "The nurses have been able to stabilise him and he should wake up in a few minutes. But the stability will only last for, at the most, a few hours. I'm sorry guys but when he wakes up I'd starting say your goodbyes." He says before leaving the room. As the door clicks shut the room falls silent except for the beeping of the heart-rate machine.

Eleanor starts sobbing again and collapses into Niall's arms. He walks her over to a chair and sits down, her on his lap. He cradles her and makes soft cooing noises in her ears. I turn my attention to Zayn who is staring at Harry, tears slowly falling down his face. He looks at me and his big, golden-brown, puffy eyes connect with mines. I reach up and wipe a few tears away from his cheeks. For the first time I realise that I'm crying, too. I place a wet, sloppy kiss on Zayn's forehead, and then rest my head against his. His eyes look up to mine and his lip quivers.

Before he can really start crying I disconnect our eyes and throw my arms around him, squeezing him against my body. He slowly wraps his arms around my waist and buries his face in my chest. I squeeze him tighter and kiss the top of his head.

"W-we c-can’t lose h-him..." Zayn stutters out between sobs. His voice his muffled by my chest, so it's hard to understand; but I do. I shake my head and rest it upon his. I make quiet 'shhs' at him but it doesn't manage to calm him down. His cries turn to quiet gasps and his body begins to shake.
