"Oh, my gosh," Daisy says on the phone. "I had no idea he could be so... sweet."
I almost want to scoff out loud. What Cayden did last night might have come off as sweet to everyone else, but I know the truth.
Unfortunately, that didn't stop me from lying awake half the night and reliving his hand groping my ass. And remembering how easily he turned me on.
"I know," I say with a smile. "It's all so exciting." I ignore the fake happiness on my face in the mirror and sit down on my bed.
"So, have you... you know, yet?"
"What?" I ask and squeeze my eyes shut. There's no way she's thinking about sex already.
"You know. I mean, he's kind of known for sleeping around."
"We only just started dating." Are people really expecting us to be doing it already?
"Yeah, but he calls you his girlfriend. That means something."
"I..." I have no idea what to say to this. "I..."
"You haven't done it yet?"
"No." Finally, a question I can answer honestly.
"Well, you should take your time. Even with his reputation, you shouldn't feel pressured."
"I know."
"Especially since you're a virgin. I don't want your first time to be like mine."
"Do you wish you had waited for Pan?"
Daisy's first time was not all that great. The guy was basically with her for one thing, and when he got it, he moved on.
Daisy takes her time to answer.
"Yes. In a way. But I think I was better prepared to give myself to Pan because of what happened. Sometimes people put too much emphasis on the first time when it's hardly ever the most important time."
"Yeah?" I've been thinking about that lately. I think I built the first time up in my head, and now I can't seem to get it over with. But I like the idea of it not being the most important time. That makes sense.
"It's up to you when you want to do it, of course. But if you feel like Cayden could be your first, then I would suggest you not freak out about it too much. Because no matter what happens, it's not likely to be your last time."
"I hear you." I check the time and sigh. "I have to go now."
"You don't sound happy about it. You're not meeting Cayden, are you? Because I would hope you're not sick of him already."
"No, I'm meeting my dad. He wants to have a talk." I put some emphasis on the last word and sigh. No matter how fake the relationship is, this talk will be real. To my dad.
"Ouch. Good luck with that. By the way, Alex thinks your dad is hot."
"Umm... ok. I'll talk to you later." I shake my head. Alex is weird. My dad is twenty years older than her. I know that's a thing, but I can't imagine my dad with someone my age.
"Bye."
I need to have this conversation with my dad, but I'm not looking forward to it. I drag my feet as I walk over to his house.
"Hi, Dad," I shout as I step inside.
"I'm in the kitchen."
I take off my shoes and jacket and steel myself.
"What's up?" I ask when I come in. The food is already on the table and Dad is sitting there all serious.
"Sit down. We have things to talk about."
"Ok." I sit and start grabbing the food.
"First of all, I need to tell you about Cayden." He sounds as if he's about to deliver some bad news.
"Go on," I say and start eating. I have no idea where this is going.
"Well, I need you to know that over the years I've known him, I've seen him with dozens, if not hundreds, of women. And I don't think I've seen him with the same woman twice."
I nod. "Yeah, he did tell me he's had a lot of one-night-stands."
"He told you?" Dad blinks at me.
"Yes." I swallow and I'm suddenly very glad that I can answer that question honestly, at least.
"That's good. He gets a point for that. But you still need to be careful with him."
I so badly want to tell him that it's not real, and he has nothing to worry about.
"I'll be fine, Dad. I'm being careful."
He clears his throat. "You know... if he ever hurts you, or even pisses you off a little, all you have to do is let me know and I'll put him through hell."
I laugh and look up from my pancakes. "You're not serious."
He looks serious. "You don't even have to tell me why. All you have to do is let me know you're not happy with him and I will make sure he wishes he was never born."
I tilt my head to one side as I try to figure out if he's joking. But there's nothing jovial in his words or his tone.
"You wouldn't do that, would you?" My dad is a good guy. He's honest and honorable, and I can't imagine him misusing his position as coach.
"I would for you."
I reach out and pat his hand. "Thank you. I don't think it'll come to that, but I'll keep it in mind."
He nods. I'm sure he has a lot more questions, but he keeps them to himself. For now.
"Eat up," he says and gestures to my plate.
"Yes, Dad."
I smile as I look over at him. Not only did I luck out in the parent-department, he's set the bar very high for any man in my life.
