Lana's POV:
Now that I knew she could speak, I wanted to throw so many questions at her. Did you crash here? Do you have the virus? Why were you so quiet? Why didn't you talk to me this whole time? Can you say anything else? Are you smart? But instead, I just said, "oh."
Oh?! Idiot...
"I know you're confused," she explained.
She CAN say more!
"Yes. I can." She said quickly.
"Wait," I stopped. "You heard me?"
"I have been this whole time. Most of the time I can understand you, but sometimes it's just..."
"Noise," I finished her sentence.
She nodded, "Noise."
Now is the time to ask questions, ain't it? It's not like we're running from 30 horseback men with guns or anything.
"How did you get here?" Was the first question.
She stopped and made that straight face again. She was quiet again, which ticked me off knowing she could speak and knowing that she can hide secrets from me.
"The ship," she finally whispered. "We were settlers looking for a place to, you know, settle. It was just me, my parents and a lot of other people..." She paused, sat down and continued, "it's been 20 years since we've found a new world. I was born 17 years ago, so yes, I was born on the ship."
She played with a piece of grass and tore it out of the ground as she talked, "something went wrong with the ship. An engine or something like that broke as we were landing, 400 feet above the ground. There was a small 'tick', then BOOM! We headed straight down when something blew up." She paused again, looking at her feet, "I watched my father and mother burn. Then kept me safe in my room, luckily I didn't keep a lot of stuff in my room to hurt me. But..." She sighed and lifted up the side of her shirt. The side of her waist was all torn, looked as if something had clawed at it. I winced at that.
"I wounded myself with my paper. A whole chunk of my paper in my hand somehow ended up at my waist. It was the most biggest paper cut I've gotten."
She placed her hand on it, winced and then let go.
"I have bandages if you need them," I offered.
"Your bandages aren't as good as mine. Mine are from a ship with medical people and stuff, yours is from a rusty old farm." And with that, she took out her own bandages and started wrapping.
"Oh," I said and then realized, "wait! How did you know I lived at a farm?!"
"Your map." She mumbled.
My map?!
Pulling out my bag, I took out my ma's book. Before opening it, I rubbed the cover with my fingers, slowly, then flipped it open. The map was out of place. I swear I didn't put it in the right pocket.
"I know," she said. "I had to make sure we were going the right way. In your... "Noise", you said you couldn't read."
I blushed at that. Dammit, dammit all to hell...
"I can read," she admitted. "Your ma's book. I swear I didn't look at it yet. I didn't wanna hurt your feelings if there was any personal information in there."
"It's fine," I said. "I... Can't even read, so I don't know what's in there."
"Has your father read any of it to you?"
I sighed, "no. My fathers dead. Plus, our Mayor wanted us to burn all the books, so if I read it while I was there, he would of found it in my Noise."
"I could read it for you," she smiled. She actually smiled.
I nodded, sat down and handed her the book.
She opened it up to the first page of the entire book. She looked at me to make sure I approved, and I just nodded again. Manchee came up beside me and laid down on his belly.
"'My dearest child,'" she began. "'As your first day born, I write to you my most precious piece. Someday in the future you'll be able to understand this, you'll be able to put these words all together and understand what I'm saying through my voice.'"
She paused to take a look at me, I looked at her to continue reading.
"'You're crying right now, but I'm here to rock you to sleep, my child.'," she looked at me again. "Can I skip to the end, please? This is all just boring stuff about how you were born. Maybe we could find out how she died."
I shook my head, "we gotta get going, anyway."
We got up, packed our stuff and then stopped to the sound of a gun loading.
I spun around and there was someone on a rock- I couldn't tell who it was, but they sure weren't friendly.
"What're you two kitties doing, burning down my here bridge?" The voice was so different... I had no idea who he was!
We didn't say anything.
"Speak up! Are y'all spies?!" She laid her finger on the trigger, "don't think I won't fire this here gun!"
It was Natalie that spoke up.
"Sir, we're not spies—"
"Then what're you doing burning down my here bridge?!" He aimed the gun at her, which made me step in front of her.
"We're being chased," I told her. I wasn't sure if I should give away our names yet.
"You better! Don't think I can't hear your Noise, girl!"
The person stepped into the light, gun still aimed at us. It wasn't a man, it was a woman. An old woman.
"I'm Ben," I lied. "This is..." I looked at Natalie, waiting for her to respond.
"Kat," she said. "I'm Kat."
I looked back at the woman, still aiming the gun.
"Don't believe ya'. Yer Noise is telling me LIES!"
How does she know? She's just an old woman.
"Oh, I know, girl. I can be deaf if I wanted to, but that doesn't mean I can't hear your thoughts. Common, speak the truth, or else I'll blow your effing head off!" She didn't say "effing".
I sighed, we had no choice now.
"I'm Lana," I finally said. "This is Natalie."
She growled, gun still aimed. "Where are you two pups from?"
"Pressistown," I mumbled, waiting for her reaction, but she just turned to Natalie, gun still aimed.
"I'll tell you if you lower the gun out of my face," she explained.
"You think I'm gonna listen? I'll do anything to protect my here farm! If I put this gun down for one second, you may attack me with that knife there." She glared at my knife, then at me.
"Ma'am," Natalie began, "we mean no harm. We're kids."
"Spy kids!" The old lady snapped.
"She's not from here," I answered for her. Natalie quickly glared at me, like I've told her her biggest secret or something. But I continued, "she's not even from New World. She's from a ship who had just crashed here." Natalie looked away, ashamed.
The old woman finally lowered her gun, "it's Autumn," she said. "Not 'old woman.' But I'd prefer you called me Ma'am."
"Ma'am," Natalie started to say. "We promise we won't do anything to hurt your farm again. Just let us pass, and we won't bother you."
She shook her head, "you two pups need a place to stay and food."
"No. We need to keep moving, they may be right on our tail—"
"We need food," Natalie looked at me. Has she given up on me?
"We have enough."
"No we don't," and with that, her and Manchee crawled up onto the rock with the old woman.
"You'll just abandon me?!"
"It's your choice to come or not, Lana." And so they jumped to the other side of the rock.
I'm gonna have to go with them now, aren't I? Dammit all...
"Wait!" I yelled, climbed up the rock and follow after them. The whole time as we walked, it was Natalie and the old woman in the front, Manchee around the middle and me trembling behind.
"Hello!" I heard a man yell. I was still exiting the trees when we entered.
"How are y'all doin'?" I gave Natalie's hand a big shake. "I'm Garret, but please call me sir."
He has Noise, I thought.
"Yes I do, pup. But you do too, why? You're a female."
I cleared my throat, "I was born this way."
The thing that struck my mind was... How is that old woman surviving? Wouldn't she get the virus too? Wouldn't she die?
"Don't listen to what those Pressis boy's been tellin' ya', girl," old woman said. "And stop callin' me ol' woman."
"Sorry," I spoke.
"You two pups must be starving! Come inside," he smiled at Manchee. "You too, pup."
"Manchee!" Manchee barked and darted after the man.
I shook my head and grabbed Natalie's arm, "we need to go. I'm not risking the chance of us being caught again. We've waisted enough time, now let's go."
"Quiet now, pup," the woman glared. "I'd be protecting dis here farm for who knows how long! Quit yer worrying."
I still don't trust them... At this point in my life, I don't trust anyone at all.
"Well, you ain't gettin' nowhere with that strategy, pup," she chuckled.
Stop reading my Noise, old lady.
"I still got a gun with me, pup."
I stopped.
"In the house, now, pups! I'll prepare something for da both of ya'," and with that, she tiptoed into the house with Natalie behind her.
I can't believe she did this. She left me! She freakin' left me for an old woman! She had a gun and then you're just gonna trust her?! Why did she build that damn bridge in the first place?!
"Bridge," Manchee murmured. "Alive."
I took a deep breath. He was right. If it wasn't for that bridge, we wouldn't be here right now. They would of taken us and done... I don't know what! I should be thankful, but I still don't trust her.
"Pup!" The old man said, "get yo ass in here and eat with yer gal!"
I rolled my eyes and stepped into the house. The smell of freshly cooked bread blew into my face. The house was warm; smelled a little old, but I loved all of these new smells.
Natalie was on the table, eating a crape that the old woman made. My mouth watered a little. I haven't had a crape for a long, long time.
Strawberries, strawberry sauce, melted chocolate, chocolate chips topped with whip cream and wrapped like a burrito in very thin bread. Take one bite and all the flavors exploded into your mouth all at once!
"Sit, pup. Imma make one special for you," she read in my Noise.
I sat down and waited, watching Natalie take slow bites and the strawberry sauce dripped down her chin. She set it down, whipped it off with a napkin and continued eating. She's taunting me. We haven't eaten in a whole day and you'd think she'd eat it faster, but she's taunting me.
"Pup," old lady said as she set a plate in front of me. I almost immediately started eating.
Oh my god.
So good...

With a full belly, me and Natalie were sent to a room in the back to sleep for the night. There was no arguing my way out now.

(Ugh I'm probably not gonna continue for a while so I'm just gonna end it here. :P)
