"Elizabeth!" Grandpa called from downstairs. I sighed and stood up. I'd get back to the floorboard later. I quickly went down the stairs to find Grandpa waiting in the kitchen on the phone.
"Yeah?" I asked.
"I forgot about your present!'
"Oh," I said, surprised. "Me too."
He led me into the family room and stopped. I cocked my head in confusion.
"Look around. You'll find it," he said with a huge grin.
I scanned the room and then I saw it. It was a beautiful piano with a giant green bow on top.
"You didn't!" I exclaimed.
"I did!"
"Oh, Grandpa! Thank you so much! I love it!" I said, hugging him tightly.
He laughed and hugged me back. "No problem, kiddo."
I ran and sat down on the bench. He followed and sat on the nearby couch.
"Now you have to play me something." He said smiling.
"Of course I do!" I laughed. "What are you in the mood for? Something soft and pretty? Or jazzy? Or fast? Or slow? Or-"
"Lets go with jazzy," he said.
I thought up a few in my head and decided on Rhapsody in Blue. I started playing and Grandpa recognized it immediately. He laughed.
"This one's my favorite."
I smiled at him and continued playing. He clapped when it was over, and then the doorbell rang shortly after.
"Probably the pizza guy," we said at the same time, and then laughed.
We mostly ate in silence. We only really started talking when Grandpa said "You know, I'm still going to have to go to work, right?"
"You still haven't retired?" I laughed.
"Nope. And I don't plan on it. I'll consider it once I'm in my sixties. But I've still got a while."
I laughed again.
"But still, you do realize I won't be home all the time?" He asked me seriously. "I always hate leaving you alone all sumner, E."
"Yes, I do realize that. Don't worry, I'll be fine. I always am." I said.
"You know, I was thinking...you can drive your moms truck around town if you want." He offered, stunning me completely. "I had Jake fix up the old thing back in January, runs better now than when she drove it."
I was a little stunned. I didn't really know how to feel about that. I hadn't known her truck was still around until a few hours ago, and now it's being offered to me?
"Umm...sure. Thanks." I replied carefully, not wanting to hurt my grandfathers feelings.
"I leave the keys on a hook in the kitchen by the phone. You're welcome to use it anytime. I hate to think of you being holed up in the house all day." He grumbled.
"Thank you." I touched his arm and he smiled at me sweetly.
"Look, tomorrow I don't have to go in until later. I want to take you to La Push."
"La Push!" I cheered. "Oh, I can't wait!"
"Yes, Billy and Jake sure are excited to see you. The gang has been asking to see you for months now." He chuckled.
