They returned to camp. Feralstorm and Lightspot put their pieces of prey, a bird and a mouse on the freshkill pile. Hazelheart had two mice in her jaws. Leafpelt had a rabbit in his jaws.
Finchkit stared up in awe. "Awesome! They're so big and strong!"
"Yeah!" Brindlekit agreed. "I wanna be just like them one day!"
Their sister Mosskit and their friend Ryekit nodded in agreement. Hazelheart and Leafpelt were very proud and happy.
They put the mice and the rabbit on the ground so that other cats could eat them.
Sedgekit and Windkit, Birchstar and Whiteshimmer's kits, both raced to the rabbit.
"I raced to it faster Sedgekit!" Windkit declared.
"No you didn't." Her brother mewed.
"Stop fighting! There is enough food for both of you!" Birchstar mewed. "Sorry daddy." Windkit meowed with her head down.
"You should be! It was just your fault." Sedgekit mewed with a superior voice in the air.
Windkit ran to Whiteshimmer. "Mommy!!"
Whiteshimmer saw her daughter crying. "Windkit!" She pulled her close with a paw. "What happened?" She asked. The white pelted kit sniffled. "Sedgekit was being mean to me."
"Sedgekit! Come here this instant!" His mother yowled.
" What's the matter?" Did Windkit lie again?" He asked.
"How dare you ask that?! And treat your sister with respect! Understood?" She meowed.
"I didn't do anything ... she was the meanie!" Sedgekit said fake crying. "He's lying mama.." Windkit meowed. Birchstar grabbed his son by the scruff and carried him to the nursery. "You need a time out. Grayfeather, would you watch him while I have a discussion with Onestar for a moment?"
The queen nodded. "Of course."
Sedgekit grumbled to himself. "Well, whatever."
"Windkit, your brother is sleeping in the back of the nursery with another one of the queens as a punishment for hurting you." Whiteshimmer soothed to her daughter.
Windkit licked her mother. "Ok.. I'll go check on him." Windkit mewed.
"Alright. If he hurts you again, tell any of the other warriors and I promise they'll report to me. Or me." She mewed gently, trying to hide the worry in her loving tone.
She was shocked by her son's behavior. Windkit went in the nursery.
"Leave me alone, I don't care if I get punished again. Just go away." Sedgekit said.
Windkit huffed. "Fine." She walked past Ryekit, Lostbird and Windflower's kit to her mother in another part of the nursery.
Ryekit walked to Sedgekit. "Are you okay?"
"No I am not... " He answered grumpily.
"Well, what's wrong?" The medium tan pelted she-cat mewed.
"It's just my sister...I have a feeling that my mom loves her more than me... she's always the best..and it seems I am permanently living in her shadow " but what concern is it of yours?" He mewed.
"I asked you what was wrong. And you told me." She replied.
"Whatever... I am just trying to grab my mother's attention. Even by doing something silly."
"Try taking it a different way." Ryekit suggested.
" I don't need anycats advice. .. I ... I .. No cat can understand what I am going through." He said gently whipping a tear from his face with a paw
"Is it because your parents are the leader and deputy of our Clan?" She asked.
"I think. They will make my sister the leader... they just don't love me!!" The blue/gray kit wailed.
"Sedgekit calm down! Mommies and daddies love their kits. Maybe they just act mean because they have to or something." She said.
"Your parents never do that .. they love you!"
Ryekit sighed. "Look, maybe you're tired."
"You know what.. just leave me alone!!" Sedgekit turned his back.
Ryekit blinked through tears. "Okay.." She scrambled on her paws and fell on her back. "Ow!!" Ryekit wailed.
Sedgekit helped her get up. "Are you alright?"
Ryekit nodded.
"Ok. Now please leave me alone?" He pressed.
She went to her mother. His mother came to see how he was feeling. "Sedgekit? I'm sorry for being so hard on you." Whiteshimmer mewed.
He sighed. "Windkit was right. I was lying.."
Whiteshimmer was laying beside her son. "Get some sleep okay?"
Sedgekit did so.
