Chapter 4

As soon as I walked into the Ice classroom, I immediately felt right at home. One bright light hung from the ceiling, lighting up the room and making it look rounder than it really was. The floor was lined with dark blue carper, and the walls were painted a light blue- the same color as the textbook. It was glossy and smooth, with the familiar white snowflake on the cover, and when I opened it, it was filled with large, curly script in blue ink. The classroom was filled with the most Thaumaturges I had ever seen in one place before, and as a result, it was about 15 degrees colder in here than it was outside. I couldn't help smiling- I had a feeling that this was going to be my favorite class.

"Welcome, welcome." Me and one other looked around, confused, until spotting an elderly fairy floating at the front of the room.

"As you may or may not already know, I am Professor Lydia Greyrose. Welcome to your Primary class. This class will focus mostly on wandwork- learning and practicing spells. In addition, we have students from all years present in this class- from the first-years to the pre-graduates. All practicers of Ice Magic are welcome in this class." She smiled brightly at us. I looked around the classroom, and there were indeed many types of students present- including the girls I had walked with earlier. "I hope that you will all enjoy your year here at Ravenwood School for the Magical Arts." She finished her little speech, and opened her big textbook, but paused in the middle of flipping a page.

"Oh yes... I believe two new Thaumaturges here this year?" She said, motioning for us to stand up. I rose to my feet, along with a shy-looking boy dressed in white on the other side of the room. "Could you introduce yourselves?"

"Um... I'm Jacob Darkheart..." He said timidly, and sat back down quickly.

"My name is Marissa Frostgem." I said. It was a little awkward hearing the other wizards marvel at my accent.

"And you just came here from Marleybone, is that right?" Professor Greyrose asked.

"Y-Yes, that's right. I arrived yesterday." I stuttered slightly. Was being foreign really that special here? I took my seat, trying to ignore the people looking at me.

"Now, I trust that you've all written your names in your textbooks already?" The professor said, causing several students to scramble for quills and ink. "That's alright, just do it now, and then turn to page five." My Ice textbook was the biggest of all of mine, with Death and Myth tying for second.

Page 5 was about the history of Ice Magic. Unlike my previous class, this lesson was short and to the point. Many of the older students looked like they really didn't want to read this page- they must cover it every year. The primary class was normally very individual- the teacher came around and helped everyone separately since we were all on different levels. I think the rest of the classes were sorted by your year and your score on the entrance exams that you took to get into the school. They really weren't 'pass or fail' tests, they were more like placement tests. It took a whole lot of studying to get into my advanced Myth class, and Dinah helped me study for my Storm test a little, but I didn't really know all that much about the other types of magic.

We read from the textbook for most of class, and then the professor and some of the older students did a demonstration about some of the spells that we'd learn this year. It was very exiting- I especially wanted to learn to actually make it snow. That would be a dream come true! The class ended too soon, and I was disappointed to have to leave, but I couldn't stay in this one class forever. I had five more to take, after all.

The storm classroom was right next to the Ice building. It was, like all of the others, decked in the colours of its class- the regal purple and electric yellow that diviners could often be seen sporting. It seemed to me that Diviners were the most proud of their type of magic- with good reason. Storm was a lively, fun type of magic that everyone liked. I entered the classroom, anxious to see what kind of teacher would be awaiting me inside.
