Ten minutes later, all the Cranks were dead and Salsa checked how many bullets she had left.
"We need to move!" she said and the five of them left the beach.
The city was overrun with Cranks and they found it really difficult to hide from them. Their group was wet, exhausted, and in pain, but they kept sneaking through the city. Salsa lived in the Scorch for three years, so she managed to find safe ways for them. The flight from Denver had taken hours, so it was early in the morning when their ship has gotten destroyed. Now it was afternoon and they found a relatively safe place in a destroyed building. All five hid on the third floor and rested against the walls. Salsa moved to one of the windows and looked down at the city.
"Thomas," she called and he got up to walk towards her. "Look."
She pointed at the huge building that was miles away from them. It was standing proudly in the middle of the city. While the other buildings surrounding it were devastated ruins, this one was new with glimmering white walls.
"The White Tower," whispered Thomas.
"You found it?" asked Minho.
"It's a long way through the city but we have no choice," muttered Salsa.
"We could reach it in a day, or less," Thomas looked at her.
"Not at this tempo and with so many obstacles in the way," she seemed worried.
"Let's rest a while," said Jorge.
The man looked bad. He had lost a lot of blood and seemed weak, but his forehead had stopped bleeding.
All agreed with him and they sat down. Salsa had her gun in her lap and Thomas was right next to her, as if he knew that she wouldn't be able to sleep without him nearby.
She looked at him and thought about Newt's words. Thomas was a great person, brave and smart, and nice. He was also handsome with his deep dark eyes, but she loved Newt. She was almost able to feel his kiss on her lips when she focused on his taste. No, Newt wasn't right. She will never be able to be happy again if she lost him.
She gave herself and the rest an hour to rest, then they continued to walk. They managed to avoid trouble until nightfall, and then decided to walk through the cover of darkness.
Salsa knew there were tunnels under this city too, but she considered it as their last option when they ran out of other ways. So far, everything seemed okay. The group walked in silence and the moon came out, shining a ghostly light over the city. They walked till they reached a strangely looking building. It was made entirely out of silver metal and looked modern, even though its windows were crushed.
"I'd rather move around that," whispered Salsa.
She never liked strangely looking things. They were too WICKED like. So the group turned onto the nearest street and were about to pass the sliver building when a stone smacked against Minho's shoulder.
"Cranks!" hissed Jorge.
He shot through the gloom and some of the Cranks screamed like they had been wounded.
"Run!" yelled Thomas, dashing towards the silver building. Stones and burning bottles were hurled at them while they ran through the opened door.
Salsa reached behind her belt and lit up her torch. The building was empty and the metal made the echo of their steps three times louder.
A burning bottle was tossed inside and Salsa scanned the doors in front of her. She chose the one on the right.
"Everyone in," she said and stayed at the end of the group. The Cranks ran into the building, screaming loudly.
Salsa ran through the door and saw a long steep corridor leading upwards. She got to the group and tossed a grenade behind her. It fell next to the door and exploded, sending the ceiling crashing over the entrance and shutting the door against the Cranks.
"There might be other ways in!" yelled Brenda.
"Move!" Salsa ran to the front of the group and used her torch to light the way up.
The building looked like a museum or something similar, but the metal corridors and huge rooms with rows of the same doors reminded her of another maze.
"Thomas," she looked at him.
"I know. It's so familiar," he looked at Minho.
"We need to keep our way to the middle of the city, but the compass isn't working in this metal prison," Salsa glanced at her watch.
"Let's choose by our hearts then," said Thomas.
The sweat drops were glistening over his face. They ran through another corridor and reached a bigger empty room.
"Good that there aren't any Grievers here," whispered Minho.
Salsa illuminated the room with her torch and suddenly the ceiling moved in the light.
"What's that?" Brenda's voice sounded unnaturally high.
Salsa followed the movement of the ceiling with the light and felt her throat tightened. The thing above her was moving like a swimming snake.
"Minho, next time shut up!" shouted Salsa. "Run!"
They hurried to another door but the huge creature emerged, falling like a metal drop from the ceiling. It was all silver and moved like an eel with huge sharp teeth in a monster like face. It was about twenty meters long and surrounded by white electric current.
