The world had collapsed. The battle fought out. It raged from every side of the school hallway. New threats arrived. More tributes fell. But it seemed as though the three tributes huddled in the corner was neglected forever. One Gryffindor, who was screaming; one Hufflepuff, who crouched low behind her and telling her they had to move on; and one Ravenclaw, unmoving, not breathing, just there on the floor.
Katniss fought back tears that were flooding her eyes and down her already wet cheek. A breakdown in a battle seemed too soon, but that was Gale Hawthorne, her best friend, her hunting partner back home, her-
"Katniss! We have to go!" Peeta was saying. He straightened up and started sending hexes here and there.
"No!" And her arms wrapped around Gale's lifeless body. She couldn't take it in. Gale was strong, he could not be-
"Katniss," Peeta said softly, embracing her with his warm arms. He didn't need to say more. Katniss didn't know how a hovercraft would appear to take Gale's body away - not that Hogwarts would allow access. So she got up, gathered her bow and together with Peeta, they rejoined the battle; looking for their allies.
Their allies were not on the same floor. So they guessed they had fled. Katniss turned back and ran across the hallway to the stairs, Peeta on her tail. As she did so, she passed Gale and let out a strangled sob. Don't break down! Her inner voice snapped at her. There were already at the stairs when they saw a silvery white light expand from Gale's chest to his whole body and engulfed him. Within seconds, he was gone. Katniss guessed this was how they take dead tributes from the arena.
Dead.
She couldn't take it in. She didn't bother wiping her tear-stained cheeks. She and Peeta continued running, dodging more people as they came so. This wouldn't end unless the Snitch is dead. She knew who the Snitch was, obviously. But Harry was her friend, too. She didn't want to think about it. She didn't want to put a thought on how this was going to end. She just wanted to go with the flow.
They turned a corner. But Katniss saw it first before Peeta did; with her foot, she pushed Peeta away from her and - instinctively - released an arrow to the attacker who happened to just have hurled a spear in Peeta's direction. The spear had whizzed past between them by a few inches and impaled the wall behind. Katniss finally turned and her hand shot up to her mouth in horror.
Marvel, one of the Slytherin tributes, had gone down on his knees. Katniss' arrow was sticking out of his chest. Marvel barely had time to touch the arrow when he collapsed face-first on the floor. And there Katniss stood, eyes wide, jaw hanging, unable to make sense of what she had done. Sure, she had killed one or two tributes back in her first Games. But this was a Hogwarts tribute. Not that Marvel was a friend of hers. But still, she thought to herself. She killed a Hogwarts tribute and student. Peeta was staring too. But he didn't look as horrorstruck as she was.
Peeta hugged her at that point. And she finally felt vulnerable. She was shaking, and the sight of her bow in her hands scared the living out of her. After years of hunting in the woods and experience of killing humans in her first Games, only now did she feel vulnerable even with a bow and an arrow in her posession. She was afraid she might kill more tributes. She soon realized that Marvek was her first kill since the beginning of the Hunger Games. She hadn't killed any of the Hogwarts tributes except for him.
That was out of instinct!
"C'mon, let's get out of here," Peeta told her softly, yet the firmness in his tone was enough to snap her back into focus.
She nodded.
Running footsteps caused her to raise her bow again, one arrow already fixed on its notch. But she lowered it immediately when she saw that it was only Harry. He stopped dead at the sight of them. His hair was all messed up than ever, and scorch marks covered his cheeks and neck. There was also a deep gash running from his temple to his chin.
