"This year's play will be Romeo and Juliet." Mr. Frank said enthusiastically. He had stated that since everyone got their scripts a week ago, they would be auditioning with those this week, then later they would get the actual script from the play to read. "Is anybody ready to audition today or is there anybody who just wants to get it over with?"
Liam raised his hand along with a few other students around the room, and Mr. Frank called on Liam to audition first. There weren't many boys in this theatre class and Mr. Frank was hoping the few boys that were here were good actors and singers.
Lucas and Maya watched as the teacher read lines with Liam. He did pretty well for being the first person up there and probably being nervous, though he volunteered himself. He declined the offer to sing, and the class clapped as he walked back to his seat next to his two friends.
"You did really well!" Maya smiled.
"Yeah that was really good." Lucas agreed. Liam smiled, putting his script into his bag.
"Who's next?" Mr. Frank's voice boomed through the auditorium. Everyone looked around to see who was volunteering. No one. No hands were raised and no voices were heard. "I guess I'll just have to pick someone."
Everyone in the class mentally urged someone to raise their hand, anxious that the teacher would call on them. Mr. Frank looked around the auditorium, eyebrow raised, building up anticipation in his students.
"You right there, blonde hair. What's your name?" Maya looked around, no one near her had blonde hair except her!
"Maya Hart." She stated as she stood up from her seat.
"Your go." He turned back to his seat and sat at a desk he had infront of the stage. Maya walked down the aisle, up the stairs and onto the stage, standing right infront of her teacher. "Where's your script?"
"I memorized it." The teacher raised his eyebrows in amazement. He was happy that he finally had a student who took the time out of their day to actually care about this class.
"Whenever you're ready."
"I don't think your idea is a good one."
"Why not?" Mr. Frank read off the script back to Maya.
"Because Mom said to wait for her. I could be wrong but leaving without her isn't waiting for her." Maya scrunched her nose and shrugged her shoulders.
The two continued to read back and forth off the script until it ended. Maya stood there waiting to get feedback from the teacher, which for her was the most nerve-wracking part! She didn't mind standing on stage and speaking infront of everyone, she didn't mind that some people probably thought she did a bad job, she only cared about what her teacher thought.
"Would you like to sing?"
"Uh, yes sir." Maya glanced over to Lucas who was smiling, giving her two thumbs up.
"Whenever you're ready." Though there was no singing in their version of Romeo and Juliet, Mr. Frank liked to know the full potential of his students.
"Take take it all away, save my heart for another day. I'm up late on the telephone and I'm all alone with the dial tone."
Maya continued to look around the auditorium. Her class was small compared to the audiences that filled the seats on show nights. She glanced over at Lucas again, who was still smiling up at her.
"Oh, somethings gotta happen somethings gotta give and somethings got to break."
She looked to her teacher, smiling from ear to ear and tapping his pen to the imaginary beat behind Maya's instrumental tune.
