Well, Kylo's lightsaber contains a cracked Kyber crystal. Since it is cracked, the blade is unstable. He put in the cross guard to vent out the sides so that the excess power wasn't contained in only one place. The lightsaber itself is so unstable that it could quite possibly explode at any minute.
