Maria got home late that night and was preparing for bed when there was the sound of breaking glass, followed by an audible thump. It sounded like it had come from the kitchen so Maria carefully walked towards it, prepared to run if something went wrong.
When she came into the room it was empty. She walked to the other side of the room and was bending to examine the broken glass when she heard footsteps behind her. She spun around quickly and was greeted by a girl with short black hair and eyes so blue they had to be contacts.
"Who are you," she screamed.
The girl smiled at her and began to laugh. She grabbed Maria's chin and jerked her head up, holding a knife to her throat.
"That doesn't matter, you'll be dead soon anyways. I'm going to paint you and these walls a nice shade of red."
Maria closed her eyes and attempted to pull away, but the girl's hold remained firm. She pulled Maria's back forwards but Maria kept her eyes firmly shut.
The girl clicked her tongue disapprovingly. "Now, now, hasn't anyone ever told you that it's considered rude not to look people in the eye when they're talking to you? I want you to watch as I paint you red. You're so pale, you need color. So please, just open your eyes."
Maria opened her eyes just slightly, and was surprised. The girl's eyes were blank and cloudy, as if she wasn't even really seeing Maria, but something else. Maria quickly closed her eyes again.
"Oh come on now they're being to get restless. It's really best not to keep them waiting."
When Maria refused to open her eyes once more the girl sighed. "Since you refuse to use your eyes, I guess I'll just take them from you."
Maria struggled as the girl slowly carved her eyes out with a knife, laughing all the while. When she was done, she released her hold on Maria and stepped back, still laughing.
"They are becoming impatient. I'm afraid I'm going to have to cut our little play date short." Maria heard her begin to approach once more.
"Who do you keep talking about," Maria asked, hoping to stall her attacker.
"What, you don't hear them? I'm talking about the monsters."
And that was the last thing Maria heard.
