Chapter one; Digging too Deep: Part two

Isobel sat on her cluttered bed, her legs crossed. She was feverishly typing away on the tiny black keys of her laptop, which rested comfortably on the mattress in front of her.

Love- to feel tender affection for somebody.

                Love-to feel desire for somebody.

                Love-to like something very much.

Her eyes scanned over the definitions shining from the screen. How were any of these definitions even remotely close to describing that curious word? Love was always described from the fireworks in your belly when the person you cared for looked at you. It was described through the unspoken words only the eyes of two partners could speak to each other . Love was not lust, you could not just desire somebody, or like something very much.  Love was the affection that screams after you every single time you walk away from it. You can’t just like someone, and call it love. That would be like a picture book winning an award for the best novel of the year. You could paint the picture but in every case; everyone would always use different colors.

She smiled at her thoughts, and began to write her article with that in mind.

A clatter echoed through her tiny apartment. Her fingers froze mid-sentence and her eyes shot to the opened door and through to the living room. At some point in a situation like this you’re supposed to jump up and call the police while you scatter around to hide… right?

As if on cue, the man sighed and just disintegrated. It was like a bouquet of minute pieces of ember just exploding. Her eyes got huge, and she let out a glass-shattering scream. Her neighbor in the apartment beside her slammed on the wall screaming for her to be quiet. She obeyed but stood there like a fish out of water. She looked at the ashes that were scattered on her living room’s floor, and rubbed her eyes wishing they would just go away. They didn’t and she let out a shaky breath. She crept slowly towards the ashes, glancing at them like some vile creature. She assumed it was probably just her eyes playing tricks on her, or even a dream. She figured it had to be a dream, so with that thought she got a broom and swept up the mess and poured the disgusting grey ashes down into the running sink. Even in a dream, cleanliness is a major priority. She left the water running down into the drain and watched as it clashed on the walls of the sink. What the hell just happened? Was that a sign from her subconscious telling her to wake the hell up? She turned the sink off after that and walked back to her room. She nestled herself into the comfort of her bed and slowly began drifting off to sleep.

 ~*~

She woke up to the loud contradiction of screeching traffic and sweet little birds singing. She reluctantly opened her eyes and groggily looked at her open window. She didn’t remember opening it but she did not care at the moment. She stretched and walked out into her living room. Her front door was open, along with every window in the room . She swallowed sharply and ran to shut everything. She must have sleep walked. That’s all that happened…

She grabbed a cereal bar and a bottle of water and speed-walked back into her bedroom. Isobel shut that window as well. She decided today was a good day to call in 'sick,' as she shut that window as well. She ate her small breakfast and began to write her article again, continuing where she left off.

It was almost six and the sun was starting to sink in the sky. You could just see the edge of it peeking over the big buildings outside her window, when her phone buzzed for the first time that day.

“Janice…” she read the caller i.d. and picked up. “Hey Jane.”

“Hey Izzy! I know that you have work tomorrow but can we meet up somewhere? The kid and Tanner aren’t home so it’s kind of lonely here…”

“Uh, yeah sure. Where do you want to meet at?” Isobel needed to get out of this house for a while anyway.

“Just come to my place, and we can catch a movie or something.” her shrill voice responded.

The phone line went dead and Isobel sighed and got ready.

It had been good to see Janice for a while. Isobel had just left, and was walking to a cab parked in front of Janice’s apartment complex. The cab roared to life as she walked closer towards it. She cautiously climbed in and greeted the cab driver through the window. He grunted an incoherent "hello" and asked for the address he was to drop her off at. She replied with the coordinates to a busy bar that was a short distance from her apartment. She was dreadfully cautious when it came to giving out her address.

Her phone buzzed while the man typed the destination into his GPS.

Janice- So, your AIM sais you are logged on, just warning you that I think you left your computer running.

She unplugged her computer before she left.

Jane was just crazy. She probably just read her computer wrong…

The taxi had stopped at a red light.  Isobel was anxious to get home. She looked up to see how far they had gotten, and caught the driver staring at her.

“By any chance is your name Isobel?” the gruff voice of the driver inquired.

                                Lie. Her subconscious screamed.

“No,” she lowered her voice to sound more raspy and dry, “I am Clara.”

“Oh sorry… erm… Clara.” He awkwardly replied.

She mentally “hoo-rahed,” she couldn’t believe that worked. After a while the driver dropped her off at the bar. Even from the sidewalk you could smell the alcohol. The cab sped away, as she walked to the door of the bar. She sighed and turned to walk to her apartment now, which was just down the way.

So just a little side note, this story isn't just about love. It’s a bit 'spooky' if that does any justice towards describing it. I just wanted to forewarn my readers that it is meant to be a bit confusing for now. Sorry for that but it has to be done(: and I posted a few covers people have made me in the side bar if you want to check those out and tell me what YOU think (:
