I don’t even understand why Sloane got caught in the first place. The Alpha just sent my team and our dads, not to mention some newbie spies to go rescue her. They didn’t tell me they were trading me for Sloane, but I guess my squad did since they didn’t freak out when I was taken.
I saw them grab Sloane as if she were their best friend. They left and ran off with her, not looking back at me for a second. They took care of her, and not me. She did look bad though, far worse than I do. She wasn’t here half as long as I was, but they tortured her, and worst of all, she actually had to watch Bradly die. She had to hear the trigger, then the bullet make contact with its target.
Why’d they take Sloane anyways? Why is she so important? Why were they willing to trade Sloane for me as well? I know they want my mom, but they haven’t done anything to me that would make her come like they did with Sloane. They made her do a video and they made all of these calls in just a little over two days or so. It has been a week and I haven’t gotten anything.
What are they waiting for?
I haven’t talked to any of the secret agents, and if I do, I’m sure they’d just ignore me or slap me to be quiet. Should I offer to be a secret agent? It seems much better than being a spy that’s for sure. I don’t even want to be a spy anymore. I used to strive to be the best, but now that I see the reality of being one, it’s the worst occupation out there.
My chains make a clanking sound as I move in my position. Sometimes she’ll use a longer chain so I can lean down and fall asleep, but tonight she used small chains, leaving me to have to sleep with my back against the wall and my arms pinned to the dungeon wall. Usually it’s like this, but when I look really bad, she gives me the long chains. I guess it’s a form of pity or simply she doesn’t want to be the one to make my life more miserable than it already is. So maybe we actually aren’t alike.
I close my eyes, but soon, I hear the dungeon door open. That’s odd; nobody should be down here right now. I open my eyes and see the Leader staring at me, her eyes staring at me, not blinking.
“What do you want?” I ask bitterly.
I see her face in the shadows, biting her lip when I acknowledge her. “I’m not the bad guy, I’m the good guy. Do you think differently?”
“No,” I say flatly. “I can’t stand the Alpha and the spies.”
I hear her open my cell, and walk inside it. She stands in front of me, her signature lipstick showing through the darkness. “If I came in here to offer you a deal, would you accept or would you be an idiotic fool and deny?”
I stare at her through the darkness, tilting my head to the side. “Depends what you call an idiotic fool and it depends what your offer is.”
She walks closer to me and takes the chains off my arms and legs. I collapse to the floor, and look up at her. She grabs the chain and plays with it, swinging it carelessly around.
“I’m offering you a way out, Wendy,” she says, her voice light as if she’s offering to take me shopping. “All you have to do is be my personal spy. Tell me everything that goes on, and you get to live.”
“Are you going to leave my family alone?” I ask.
She stopped swinging the chain long enough to give me her full attention. “When I was going to kill your mother, it wasn’t because of the baby.”
“Then what was it?” I say, rolling my eyes at her.
The Leader leans down next to me, her eyes showing through the darkness. I feel her hand around my neck, her breath hitting me. “She and I go way back, did you know that? We briefly knew each other, your parents and I-“
