“She’ll always be safe,” my grandfather says, loudly. “She’ll never be harmed. Even if you did find her here, we’d all kill you before any sound escapes your lips.”
“Well, that’s rather rude,” a man’s voice drawls loudly. “She’s going to need me once she runs from the spies.”
“It will be her choice if she wants your help. Why would she want help from a runaway spy anyways? Gary helped you get away, why would you put yourself in danger for her?”
“Because, her father wants me to marry her.”
What? I crawled out from under the bed, and stare at him. He looks at me, surprised. He isn’t much older than me, maybe nineteen? I stare at him, my eyes narrowing. “My father has never spoken of you. He doesn’t care about my safety nor who I pick to be wed with.”
He rolls his eyes at me. “Such like your father. Short tempered, fights with their mood not their mind. Easily killable.”
“Why would my grandparents try to kill you if you find me?” I spit out, staring at him angrily.
“They don’t want me to be with you. They want you to be with a boy from your group. I believe his name is Eric. As you can see, your grandparents will do anything to get what they want. Sloane is living proof isn’t it?”
I give him my best dirty look. How dare he think he can waltz in here and think he can pick me off my feet and inform me that I’m going to marry him whether I like it or not. “This isn’t some arranged marriage story, buddy. I don’t want to marry you, and I definitely don’t want to marry Eric. Now leave before I find a knife and stab it so hard into you that you’ll wish you didn’t say a word.”
The guy smirks. He runs his hand through his messy mass of chestnut curls, and slowly he turns on his heels, and walks out of the house, humming.
I look at my grandparents, and then back at the open doorway. “So, care to explain to me why this unknown man comes in here and claims that my father wants me to marry him?”
“Did you really think your father was going to leave you without protection?” My grandfather asks, hurt. “I raised him better than that.”
It was at the tip of my tongue to make a snappy response, and I wanted to say it. I wanted him to get the same medicine I gave my parents. He didn’t raise him. The spies did. I sit on my bed, staring at both of them angrily. “You have to stop this. I have to leave, this isn’t the place I need to be at.”
“Where are you supposed to be?” Grandmother asks, staring at me with her eyebrows furrowed.
“I need to be with my mother and sibling at the moment. They are unprotected. I have to be a worm for the secret agents, and at the same time I have to kiss up to the Alpha so I can be safe.”
They nod seriously, knowing this was what is right. I’m not going to abandon my family in their time of need even though they treat me like dog urine. I eat breakfast, and soon I’m on an airplane heading back home. I texted Eric with my grandmother’s phone and sent him the details to pick me up. I figured my father is gone, and my mother shouldn’t drive, and not to mention Sloane and I aren’t on the best terms. Oh and I’m sure Alex isn’t a big fan of me right not either.
I lean in my airplane seat, and think about what my grandparents said before I left. I’m always welcome at their home, a home I don’t want to leave, but I know it’s the right choice to come back here. It’s not like the Alpha had people tracking me down or anything like that.
When my plane landed, I ran out of the plane, and into the airport. I run past baggage claim and just head to the car pickup area. I see Eric before he sees me. I run up to the car, banging on the window energetically.
