chapter twenty-one

Start from the beginning

"Well, maybe we need to try something a little different," Natasha said and gestured to the flying Chitauri's.

"You wanna get up there, you're gonna need a ride," Steve told her.

"I got a ride. I could use a lift, though." Black Widow backed up to give herself a running start. Steve lifted and angled his shield.

"Are you sure about this?" Steve asked.

"Yeah. It's gonna be fun." Natasha ran up a car and jumped onto Steve's shield, who gave her a boost. She grabbed onto one of the flying Chitauri and flew off.

"I guess it's just you and me now, Cap," Evelyn said.

"I guess it is," he chuckled.

Evelyn turned her head and saw more incoming Chitauri aliens. She continued to use her katanas against the Chitauri, slicing their heads off, stabbing them and killing as many as she could. She heard a scream coming from somewhere, turned her head, and saw a girl cornered by a Chitauri. Evelyn ran off towards her.

"Hey!" Evelyn threw a rock at the alien. It turned towards her. "Pick on someone your own size."

It ran at Evelyn, but she quickly threw her katana at his face, successfully killing it. It collapsed onto the ground, and Evelyn pulled out the katana. She put it back onto her back and slowly walked towards the girl.

"Hey, it's alright. You're safe now." The girl came out from the corner slowly, looking at Evelyn curiously. "What's your name?"

"Cordelia," she said, her voice gentle and quiet.

"Wow, that's a beautiful name," Evelyn smiled at the girl, making her smile. "Where are your parents, Cordelia?"

"Mum's at the bank, dad's...." she suddenly stopped and pointed at a dead man on the ground. Evelyn's face dropped as the girl looked at her with wide, scared eyes.

"Captain, the bank on 42nd past Madison, they caught a lot of civilians there," Clint said over the earpiece.

"I'm on it," Steve said.

"Wait!" Evelyn said. "I have a child with me whose mother is in there. Can you help me take her there safely?" Evelyn looked around for Steve.

"Sure. Where are you?" He asked.

Evelyn looked around for a building and saw a sign. "In front of some 'Shwarma' building."

"That's right down your road, Cap," Clint informed him.

Evelyn turned her head and saw Steve running down the street towards them. He ran up and plastered on his poster-boy smile. "Cordelia, this is Captain America. Mr America, this is Cordelia."

"Hi, Cordelia. How old are you?" Steve asked. She held up ten fingers. "I'm here to help take you to your mother. Come on."

The three of them ran down the street. Evelyn did all she could to keep the flying debris and Chitauri aliens away from Cordelia. Steve was also fighting off every Chitauri alien that tried to attack them. When they reached the bank, Evelyn could see many people trapped inside. "Steve, go in and get the Chitauri. I'll stay out here with Cordelia."

"Are you sure?" He asked.

"We'll be fine." He nodded, reluctantly, then began looking for a way to get in. Evelyn turned around. Chitauri aliens started coming up to them, so Evelyn backed away towards a wall.

Once Cordelia was safe behind her, Evelyn threw an ice spear at a Chitauri in front of her. She fought off any that came towards them until there was an explosion in the bank, and Steve came flying through a window, landing very hard on a car nearby. Evelyn rushed over to him, and he looked up tiredly.

"Are you okay?" Evelyn quickly asked, giving his face a once over to make sure that he was alright

"Yeah...yeah, I'm alright, just aliens trying to kill me. I'll be alright," he murmured and slowly got up.

"Cordelia?" A voice asked. Evelyn and Cordelia both turned around and saw a woman cautiously take a step towards them. But when she saw that it was Cordelia, her face lit up. "Cordelia!"

"Mommy!" She said as she ran up to the woman and gave her a hug.

"You're okay. You're okay," she repeatedly mumbled as she kissed her face.

"Yes, Mommy, I'm okay," she giggled.

The woman then looked up at Evelyn and smiled lightly. "Thank you."

Evelyn smiled. "No problem. You have such a special daughter."

The mother chuckled. "Like you wouldn't believe."

"Cordelia, my dear!" A male's voice yelped out, instantly springing over to the group. "You gave us quite the scare, running off like that. You know I can't handle your mother by myself. Don't you ever scare us like that again."

Cordelia chuckled lightly. "Yes, Uncle Sebastian."

Evelyn then looked towards Steve and saw that he was looking down, completely frozen. "Umm...I have to go. Stay safe."

"Thank you, Gemini," the mother said.

Evelyn smiled with a nod and ran off towards Steve. "Steve, is everything alright?"

"Yeah, it's just, I don't know if I can do this anymore," he mumbled. "Aliens are coming out of the sky, and to me, it was only nineteen forty-five just a few months ago, and I just...I don't think I can do it."

"Steve, you have taken down HYDRA bases and have been frozen for seventy years. You've helped save the world from HYDRA," Evelyn told him. "You're Captain freaking America, for Christ's sake! You can take out a couple of aliens."

He looked up at Evelyn and nodded. "You're right," he said. "There are aliens destroying my country, wanting to take over the world, and I need to stop them."

Evelyn grinned and nodded before the two ran off.
