I’m ten minutes late for school by the time I see the building. I rush in, and run into my classroom. Thankfully my English teacher is laid back and doesn’t mind people being late. Heck, she’s late half the time.
I try to pay attention, but my mind wanders as the time goes on. At lunch I see Sandy and her friends crowded around her locker, all of them talking energetically. Sandy waves at me, summoning me to come over.
I walk over, smiling hello to all of them. Sandy leans against her locker, smiling at me. “You know, you aren’t that ugly.”
She means well.
“Thank you, Sandy.”
“You’re welcome,” she says brightly. She digs inside her bag and pulls out an invitation. “I’m throwing a party. Want to come? Sloane and her friends won’t be there. . . so maybe we could spend some alone time. . . ”
What does she mean by that? I’m hoping she’s having one of her “dumb moments” and didn’t mean what I think she means. “Sure, I’ll come.”
“Great,” she says, smiling brightly at me.
She hands me the invitation, and I leave and eat lunch with some random kids. I don’t see the point in making friends. Once they find out about my parents they won’t want to be my friend anymore. They’ll say I steal things from them, and of course it’s a lie. So instead, I sketch the school cafeteria while I eat.
I’m lost in my own world when I feel somebody tap me on my back. I turn around and see a girl holding a cafeteria plate, twirling a piece of her brown hair with her other hand. “Hey. I hear you’re going to Sandy’s party. Maybe I’ll see you there?”
She looks like she’s going to have a panic attack. I smile at her and nod. “Sure.”
She giggles and runs to her table. That was odd. When lunch is over, I have free period, so I walk down the halls to the library. Kids say hey to me and an occasional high five. Is being invited to Sandy’s party more than just an invitation to her house? It’s like I’ve become famous overnight. I hate it.
I hide inside the library and work on my assignment. I feel like I’m being watched. I look up and see a group of kids staring at me, giggling when they notice me looking. They look at each other, and then back at me, giggling even more.
I try to continue working on my assignment, but I’m getting nowhere with those girls giggling at me. I leave the library, frustrated. The library is really the only place I really like in this school. Now it’s ruined by giggly girls.
When school ended, I see Neil waiting outside of school, smiling. “Drop me off back at home and you can take the truck to the headquarters.”
When we get in front of the house, I wave good-bye to Neil, and then I make my way to the headquarters. By the time I get there, Alex is already getting out of the car, a giant gym bag over his shoulder.
“Hey,” Alex greets me, opening the door for me.
“Hey,” I say, walking inside comfortably.
I walk past the training room. I’ve been training a lot there so I’ll impress the Alpha. Lately I’ve been lacking in the strength department, and definitely lacking in the leader skills. I walk to the Alphas office, Alex on my heels.
I knock on the door, and Wendy answers the door, still wearing her cheerleading outfit. Her hair is in a high ponytail, and she’s wearing pink sparkly makeup. I laugh out loud, nearly toppling over in laughter.
Wendy rolls her eyes, and waits for me to finish before she kicks me in between the legs. I cough out loud surprised, and fall to the ground, grunting. Alex laughs loudly, and walks into the office, stepping around me.
