Dell went to check on the girls a quarter past 3 a.m. Both were still on the ground, far past slouched over and snoozing. He did all that he could to not roll his eyes as he pried his sister off the floor.
He placed her on the bed and brought a blanked to cover her. She immediately grasped onto it and rolled over. Light snoring filled the area and Dell moved onto the second girl.
Neru's golden hair seemed to sparkle in the moonlight. Her porcelain skin made her look like a doll. She felt soft to the touch, as well, Dell noted as he picked her up bridal style. She leaned her head against his chest and in a groggy haze, she faintly recalled being brought to his room and placed in his bed. A blanket was placed over her and she found herself cocooned in warmth. Her eyes fluttered open for a fraction of a second as Dell kissed her forehead before falling back into a deep sleep.
When Neru woke up, it was the middle of the day and Dell was not in the room. Nor could she fully remember how she had arrived in bed. Nevertheless, she was cozy and therefore she was grateful. She almost didn't want to leave.
A loud rumbling and slight pain from her stomach area quickly dismissed any ideas of staying in bed all day. Begrudgingly, she got up and left the room.
The house was quiet with most of the lights turned off. That isn't to say that it was dark though. Quite the contrary, for such a small house there were a surprising amount of windows that let in tons of natural light.
She found Dell in the kitchen. His back was towards her. As she got closer, she could see that he was cutting vegetables on a cutting board.
"Yo," Neru said after a few minutes.
"You hungry?"
Her stomach spoke for her, speaking in a grumbled language that only made sense when stomachs spoke it. Dell gave an easy laugh as he slid the vegetables into a pot of broth.
"Haku went out shopping, but I should have enough for the two of us."
He used a wooden spoon to stir all of the ingredients together. It created a little whirl in the center of the pot, capturing Neru's attention.
"Do you need any help?"
"No, it's just about finished. I'll get it served up."
"Thanks," Neru said, unsure of how to ease the awkwardness.
Dell handed her a bowl and they sat down to eat in the living room.
"Where did you sleep last night?"
"On the couch. We only have two beds. Where else would I sleep?" He gave her a funny look.
"O-oh... Right. Well I could have taken the couch."
"Did you not like my bed?"
Neru looked at him only to find a smirk on his lips. He was teasing her.
"It wasn't anything special."
"Well, I'm not a very special guy. So I suppose it's only fair."
That was Neru's cue to say something witty. Or to say anything, really. But what could she say that didn't sound stupid? Apparently nothing, because that's all she said.
"You and Haku stayed up late. What were you two talking about?" Dell asked after a bit of time.
"She said you dated VFlower," Neru blurted out.
That was the wrong thing to say, but Dell played if off nicely. "Oh, so she told you that story? Gotta admit that V is pretty cool; we're still good friends. But that was years ago, it's all in the past now."
He smiled at Neru and asked her about who her close friends were.
"I went to school with Cul before I transferred. She's a slut and an asshole, but she's chill."
"You should invite her over. With everything that's happened, you could use some chill."
Neru didn't need to be told twice. Things had been chaotic lately, so she took Dell's advice. Perhaps Cul was just what she needed right now.
