“What do you mean surgery?” I ask Seth over the phone. I’ve locked myself in the bathroom.
“I’m not so sure the doctors…the doctors think it’ll help.”
“Help what? I thought she was getting better?” The chemo was working, Olive said so; hell, even Alexander told me so.
Seth is quite for a long time. I can hear Mom and Travis screaming from downstairs. I don’t normally lock myself in the bathroom when they fight, but at dinner a few days ago he truly scared me. The last time I was so terrified was when I dated Gale. Truth be told, I saw the same look in Travis’ eyes that Gale always has.
“I thought Olive told you…” Seth says softly.
“Told me what?” My voice is being mixed with rage and concern.
Seth takes a deep breath, “The doctors think surgery is the best choice now.”
I swallow, “Does she need blood, or anything?” I’ve donated her some blood because we have the same type, O negative.
“I don’t know, Brent,” He sounds nervous now. I guess he figured out Olive didn’t tell me because she probably didn’t want me to know. “Sarah didn’t say much.”
“You’d tell me if you knew anything, right?”
Seth doesn’t say anything for a few seconds, “Olive comes first.”
I smile, “Good answer.” Olive should come first. “What time is her surgery?”
“Ah…”
“Tell me so I don’t have to call Alexander.” I really don’t like talking to that man, Seth knows that.
Seth takes a deep breath, “Just be at the hospital by two.”
“Okay,” First chemo now a surgery, this cancer really wants to take Olive from me. ”See you then.” I hang up the phone for three reasons. One, I don’t want to talk to anyone. Two, our conversation was over. Three, and the most important one, Mom and Travis are getting too loud and I was having trouble hearing him.
Something happened in Paris that Travis still isn’t over, but for some reason they’ve been keeping the details quiet. I like to not get involved with those two so I’m really not pushing it, but if it’s not over within the next few days I’m gonna have to find out. They were fine the other day, but now I’m worried for my mother.
By two fifteen I’m by Olive’s side.
“Who told you?” Is the first thing she says to me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Olive?” A nurse comes in, “We have to get you ready.”
She nods before giving me the stink eye, “When the drugs where off Seth is so dead.” She tells me the nurse puts something in her IV.
“I’ll see you in few hours.” I wave goodbye to my sister.
She nods, “See ya.”

There’s a knock on the door which queues Olive to waves to me with a sad smile. Dad yelled at me again last night. I don’t know why. I think it was because of AJ. You know I killed him? Dad does. He hates me now. I was supposed to stay for the long weekend, but it’s Saturday morning and Mommy and Mr. Marcus are here to get me.
Honestly, I’m happy we’re leaving. Before Dad started screaming he wanted me to play catch with him. I’m not good at catch. Mr. Marcus says I’m getting better, but Dad would just see how much I suck and yell at me for how I throw the ball. If I would have known I was going to get yelled at either way I would have played. I like catch, even though I’m bad at it. Mr. Marcus says it’s not about winning it’s about having fun. He said it also goes for being good at the game.
