(11) Understand Me

Start from the beginning

Skye couldn’t help but notice how horrifying Anita looked next to Dolly. As she yelled at her, the fat under her chin jiggled. Her face was slick with oil, and she constantly looked like she had just been exercising. Whereas Dolly’s petite frame, soft features, and flawless freckled skin made her look like an actress. It was almost painful to watch.

Dolly looked like she wanted to throw up and slap Anita at the same time. But instead, she smiled spitefully. Her usually small eyes seemed to bulge as a look of mock enthusiasm spread across her features.

Skye covered her mouth and pinched herself so she wouldn’t burst into uncontrollable fits of laughter.

Anita scowled obviously noticing Dolly’s fakeness and plodded out of the room without another glance.

“I hate that bitch!” Dolly whisper-hissed as soon as Anita was out of earshot.

“Me too,” Skye agreed.

The lights turned off and the room was pitch black. Skye lay her head on the stiff pillow and closed her eyes, pretending to sleep. She could hear Dolly next to her, twisting and turning, trying to get comfortable on her bed. Skye blocked out the noise and pretended she was dreaming. Suddenly, Skye felt a jab of a finger on her shoulder blade.

“What the fu—“

“Shh! You’ll wake everyone up,” whispered Dolly.

“Then why’d you poke me!” Skye retorted.

Dolly crawled into a ball and pulled the sheets tighter against her.

“I can’t sleep.”

“Why?”

Dolly bit her thin pink bottom lip, deep in thought, and after a moment she finally said, “I’m so tired of being cooped up in here and doing the same thing everyday. I want a change.”

“Well, if you don’t want to escape with me, you’ll have to deal with it forever,” replied Skye temptingly.

Dolly was quiet for a moment before saying,

“I don’t know, Skye.”

The blonde girl turned over in her sleep and both girls fell silent for a moment. When Skye felt it was safe to talk again she said,

“I have an idea. If you stay up for an hour, I’ll show you something.”

Skye could not believe she had just suggested that. She clamped a hand over her mouth, but it was too late. The secret was out.

Skye couldn’t see Dolly, but she heard her head brushing against the fabric of the pillow.

“I’ll try.”

Skye smiled and closed her eyes. She knew Dolly would be asleep in a matter of minutes, so it wouldn’t even matter. She saw her and Ace sitting on a bench in the park she used to always go to in her past life. He was holding her hand and calling her Liliana, not Skye. They were dressed in all white for purity, innocence, and new beginnings. He told her everything would be okay, they just needed to hang on and get through it. And for some weird reason she couldn’t fathom she believed him.

“Skye!” hissed Dolly, waking Skye up from her light sleep.

“Oh, sorry. I guess I fell asleep,” Skye whispered. She blinked her eyes in surprise to the dark surroundings. Had she really just had a dream?

“Yeah, so what did you want to show me?” asked Dolly. Skye could tell she was burning with curiosity. She was probably more bored than Skye thought she was.
