Chapter One- The First Time

The map. That's all I could think about. What did it mean? Where and who did it come from? Was it trying to take me somewhere? Will anyone believe me if I tell them about it? Sorry, you're probably really confused. I guess I can tell you, I'll just start from the beginning.

My name is Jerry. I am a 12 year old boy that goes to Jefferson Middle School. My best friend's name is Toby, and my favorite food is my Aunt Gemima's casserole.

But that's all boring stuff, you probably want to know about that map I was talking about, right? Well, I was in the middle of a math test, which I probably failed, when I first saw it.

I got the paper, and did what I usually do when I get a test; look at the first couple of questions, think "aaaand there goes my trip to Summer Camp," then aimlessly look around the room until I decide to just get the test over with.

Except that day was different. When I looked at the first three questions, they all said the same thing:

"Look at your teacher's desk"

I stared at the paper for a second... and then looked at my teacher's desk, as it said to do. My teacher wasn't sitting at the desk (she must've left to use the bathroom), and her desk mainly looked the same as it always had, an apple, stack of books, that weird bell thing, a pen, and a globe on its wooden surface.

The only thing that was different was a map taped to the front part of the desk. I had never noticed it before. "Is that new or has it always been there?" I thought. "It's probably always been there I just never realized it.... No, it had to be new, this is math class, why would there be a map taped to her desk?!"

I looked around the room to see if anyone else had the same puzzled look as I did. No one. They were all just looking down at their test, either working or trying to. I looked back at my paper, but instead of seeing:

"Look at your teacher's desk"

I saw three real math questions! "This has to be a prank!" I thought as I looked around the room for grinning faces. Everyone looked normal, so either they were all good at acting, or it wasn't a prank. I looked up at my teacher's desk and the map wasn't there anymore!

This is when I started to freak out a little bit. You see, like I said before, my teacher wasn't in the classroom at the time, and I was positive no one had gotten out of their seat, so NO ONE could've taken the map off, and it was highly unlikely that someone switched my test with a new one without me knowing. None of the desks are touching mine, and are pretty far away from me.

My teacher walked back into the classroom, then started praising us for being so quiet. I looked at the clock and saw that we only had 40 minutes left of class. "I'll just finish the test and tell Toby about this next period," I thought. Toby is my best friend, in case you forgot.
