Get Your Spy On Chapter 18

Start from the beginning

"I'm sure you'll do great," Ben says, tapping her nose with his index finger.

I force myself not to roll my eyes. Ben only acts gushy when she's around. To be honest, their relationship was a shock to all of us. Ben, the snobby nerd, dating the popular ditz. Then again, she wasn't popular at all when they went to school together.

"I sure hope so," Sandy says, sighing. "It helps me keep my mind off of the college applications I sent. I hope we both get into the same college."

I doubt Sandy could get into the college Ben wants to go to. It's one of the hardest schools to get in.

Ben must be thinking the same thing. "If you don't get in, it's not a big deal. We'll stay together, I promise."

Sandy smiles at him, and then they start snuggling. I groan in disgust, and head outside. I don't know what to do, but I don't want to be in that house while Sandy's there. Even if I'm in my room, I can still hear them act all lovey dovey. I look at my phone and see that text message from my mother is still on my phone.

Haven't heard from you in a while sweetie. I know our conversation at the ice cream parlor was unpleasant, but I'd love to talk to you. Love you!

I get inside my car, and think it over. If I go there, all that's going to happen is that I'm going to punch Matt in the face. She's still my mother though, and I have to see her sometimes. I dial her number, and she picks up on the first ring. "Hello?"

"Hey, mom."

"Alex," she says, her voice surprised. "You called."

I think about saying something rude back, but instead I take a deep breath, and try to have a civil conversation. "Yeah, I figured I could come over. Are you by yourself?"

"Yes, Matt's on a business trip. It's lonely here without him around. Is Ben going to come with you?"

"No, just me."

"Oh, okay."

I close my eyes, feeling the sadness in her words. Ben hasn't spoken to her since he found out about the affair. He refuses to even talk about it. On top of that, he doesn't even know about Matt being a secret agent. Which I'm pretty sure he is.

I tell mom I'll be there soon, and then hang up. I wish I could call someone for advice, but there's nobody to talk to. I could call Eric, but he has Wendy on his hands, that being said Wendy isn't exactly an option. After a moment, I call Sloane. It goes straight to voicemail. I think about leaving her a message, but at the last second, I hang up. If she doesn't want to talk to me, then she most definitely won't want to hear a message from me.

I start my truck and then head over to mom's house. A house that used to be mine, that I used to call "home". When I see it, it seems strange that that use to be my home. The apartment seems more like my home now, even though it has only been a few months.

I knock on the door, and Mom opens it excitedly. "Hi!"

She lets me in, and I'm surprised to see that everything is mostly the same. I figured Matt would try to change everything once I left. The only thing different are the pictures. There aren't any pictures of me or Ben in the house, which isn't surprising. There was one picture of us when I lived here, but Matt kept moving it so you couldn't see it.

She ushers me to the kitchen and tells me to sit down. I do what she says, sitting down in the chair I used to sit in every day for all of my meals. She gets two cups of coffee, and sets one down in front of me. She sits down, blows on her cup, and then takes a sip. "How are you?"
