"Selena!" my mother screamed. There were hunters in their dark colored gear surrounding us from all sides, and two of them had managed to pull us apart.

"Mommy!" I cried. A couple of the men were blocking her from my sight, and I was terrified of what might be happening to her.

Suddenly, I saw a flash of silver as she flew up into the sky and out of the hunters' reach. She looked down at me and saw the terror on my face. She swooped down, her light gray wings moving swiftly. She picked me up off the ground and flew back into the afternoon sky, higher than before.

A moment later there were gunshots ringing through the air, and with each shot that echoed, my mother only held me tighter. She dodged the bullets easily at first, until they became more frequent as more hunters joined in on attempting to shoot us down.

Mom got hit. I felt her leg move from the impact and heard her quietly groan in pain. I looked up at her, and saw her determined face.

She stopped trying to dodge bullets and started flying full speed toward safety. She was flying so fast the wind stung my eyes whenever I tried to look forward. I closed my eyes, and it made me feel better for a moment.

I felt bullets breeze past me. Mom was hit a few more times, but refused to stop trying to save me. I opened my eyes and gazed up at my mother. I felt tears stinging my eyes in the wind, but I didn't care. I had to see her face. She glanced down at me, and gave a smile, trying to mask her pain.

"I love you..." I told her.

She smiled and placed a long kiss on my forehead, then put her mouth next to my ear and ordered, "Fly when I tell you to do so. Understand?"

I could barely hear her over the wind and resounding echoes of gunshots, but I nodded. I took one last look at my mother's face, then turned away from her and readied my wings.

A few minutes later, she was shot in her wing and couldn't go on. I heard her yell for me to fly away, and then felt her place something in my hand before she let go. I extended my wings and quickly continued flying, clinging to the item, knowing that my mother would want me to keep going, and not return for her.

I heard the hunters shouting in the distance. No one shot at me. They were all ecstatic that my mother was falling to her death.

I heard a gunshot, and my mother's scream as she died in midair.

I awoke with a scream. I sat up quickly, and memories of the last few hours came rushing back to me, and I calmed slightly once I remembered where I was. I wasn't five anymore, I was fifteen. But my mother was still gone.

The memory made my eyes water, and I tried hard not to cry. I squeezed my eyes closed, lay back on the table, and jumped with a start as I heard the doors to the room burst open.

They must have heard me scream, I thought, refusing to open my eyes. I felt a hand on my shoulder.

"If it makes you feel any better, we ran the tests while you were asleep. You can leave once you've fully recovered from the poison my stupid husband here injected you with."

I opened my eyes to see the woman's face, blurred from my tears. The man stood off to the side, arms crossed, clearly insulted.

"So did you have a nightmare or something?" she asked, seeming genuinely worried.

"It was nothing. Just relived a horrible memory is all. It happens all the time. I'm not quite sure how I'm not used to it yet."

"Maybe you just need to talk about it. I'll listen if you'd like."

I didn't know why or how, but I ended up telling her everything about the horrible nightmare. Something about her just made her seem so trustworthy and caring. Maybe it was the mother coming out in her. She was simply caring for a distressed child.

"That must have been hard for you," she said once I had finished, then removed her hand from my shoulder. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that, and that you've been reliving it for so long." She glanced away, probably not sure what else she could say. "Well, if you believe you have recovered completely, you can go. Or you can stay for another couple of hours if you feel you need it."

"Actually, can I asked you a question?" I asked, suddenly nervous. They'd been nice to me, and I had told her my worst nightmare, but I didn't know if I should trust them completely just yet. "Two question, actually?"

"Of course," she answered kindly.

"Will you please not tell anyone else what you found out about me?" I pleaded. "I'd be running from hunters more often than I am now if they knew what I am."

She considered this for a moment, and glanced at her husband as she answered. "I suppose as long as we have our questions about you answered, then that's enough. I promise we won't tell a soul."

"Thank you," I sighed in relief.

She nodded, and awaited the second question.

I took a deep breath. "Do you know of a man named Sebastian Michaelis?"

"Hmm," she thought. "I know of a man name Sebastian who works at the bank, one for the Scotland Yard, and another one who I believe worked for the Earl of Phantomhive. Any of those ring a bell?"

"The last one," I said, hope filling me. If Dad was away because he was in a contract, then he would be working with someone on achieving their goals or dreams. And the most logical place to hide was in plain sight as a servant. "Is there any way you could take me there? I have to find him."

"I suppose I could," she said with a smile.

I was so happy; I would have jumped up and down like a hyperactive kangaroo if I hadn't been able to control myself.

"Thank you!" I squealed, almost hugging her.

"You're welcome," she said. "So what's your name?"

"Selena," I answered.

She smiled at me again. "Well, Selena, rest up. We'll leave for the Phantomhive Estate in two hours."
