Rewriting Memories
(By Sourav Das)
Prologue
It's been a stretch of time since my semesters ended. I was completely taken aback to catch sight of a humongous alteration in his behaviour. His academics was already down, probably because of his love affair. He seemed to be on drugs, as he behaved completely like a psychopath. Though, he refused to concur both. But these bummers in his life made him gain expertise in faking a smile. He beamed like no one else could.
"Life – isn't it so short to hear?'' – he exclaimed, breaking the awkward silence of the room. ''but it is the most dreadful journey one has to transverse. In this journey, there is pain and suffering in every nook and corner. It is a journey of endless miseries and absolutely no relief.''- he added.
"But the journey of life isn't meant to be feared and planned, it is meant to be travelled and enjoyed!'' – I remarked with a sensation of superior feelings.
"You look better in motionless lips, so I suggest you not to direct me''-he replied, being displeased with my answer.
Unable to make out what he meant, I was distracted by the sudden knock on the door. Till then, the vapour had already disappeared from the cup of coffee. Being back in my senses, I realised that I had taken off to an arena of my hallucination. Then, I abruptly moved away from the mirror as I found it quite awkward to talk to my mirror reflection.
The knocks on the door was persistent with increasing amplitude. It seemed to be my younger sister, Manvi.
"You may enter. The door is open.''- I shouted being irritated with the consistent knocks.
But the one who entered my room was somebody else, divinely to look at. Her amazonian figure set well on her wafer-thin body. She had a decanter shaped waist and her complexion had an impeccable, ochrous hue. Her pencil thin eyebrows eased down gently to her black, beetle's leg eyelashes. A sculptor couldn't have fashioned her seraph's eyes and pixie's nose any better. When she broke into smile, her beguiling, oyster white teeth lit up the room. It jolted like an electric current when the megawatt smile gave me her full attention. She was Priya Sahani, my beloved ex. I trembled with cold when she handed me a gift wrapped box and wished a "Happy Birthday.''
Some sort of spark went through my body as I stood spell bound. It seemed as if we were renewed by love. The heart of each held sources of love for the heart of the other. "I must leave now, I'm running late''- she interrupted my thoughts. With casual formalities, I bid her bye.
While she was gone, I sat still on my sofa with the box right in front of my eyes. For a split of second, I was swayed away. Thousands of memories flashed back in my mind and millions of questions were haunting me. Gathering some courage, I pulled the ribbons of the box apart and started unboxing it. To my utter surprise, the box was all hollow except few old pieces of paper bunched up.
Taking out the pile of paper, I realised that those were her writings. I was amazed to find out that she had been taking interest in literature. Gazing a look on the paper was a treat for the eyes. The handwriting was fairer than the word 'fair' itself. The weak construction of sentences made me laugh though, as I started reading -
"All good things come to an end,
Even the gifts Gods send.
Like you, he sent from above,
You're the one whom I truly love.
You changed everything and made my life worthwhile,
