"Who wrote to you, N/N?" a teasing voice asked. Y/N quickly shoved the paper underneath something.

"No-nobody-" Y/N choked out, turning around to face the person. It was Eliza, the sister most likely to understand. She breathed a sigh of relief. "Sorry. I- I just don't want Angelica to know."

Eliza nodded, pulling up a chair and sitting next to her sister, wrapping her arm around her shoulders.

"Aaron again?"

Eliza laughed as her sister nodded eagerly, her face lit up.

"He has such a way with words, Eliza. He- I fall more in love with him every time I get a letter."

Eliza smiled, thinking of her own Alexander. "I know what you mean. But you have to tell Angelica. And our parents, for that matter."

Y/N tipped her head back against the back of the chair and sighed. "I don't know. Do you- do you think they'll understand?"

"Of course," Eliza said kindly, squeezing her younger sister tightly. "Let's go tell Angelica now, okay? Peggy will be there, and she's the most understanding person I know. And we can tell Mother, Father, and our brothers at supper."

Y/N nodded despite the butterflies in her stomach. "Okay. We have to do it now before I lose my nerve."

The girls giggled, standing up and making their way to Angelica's bedroom. Both Peggy and Angelica were perched on the bed, talking and laughing. They looked up as Eliza and Y/N entered. Peggy happily patted the spot next to her.

"Sit, sit! We were just talking about the ball!"

"Actually," Eliza told them pointedly, giving a look to the youngest Schuyler. "Y/N has something to tell you."

Y/N nodded, all eyes shifting to her. "I- you remember Aaron Burr, right?"

"Yeah?" Angelica asked suspiciously. "You're not- still talking to him, are you?"

Peggy shrieked, "You are, aren't you! Ah!"

Y/N laughed. "Yeah, actually, I am. He- he's been writing letters to me, and I have just sent my first response."

Angelica narrowed her eyes, but eventually, let out a sigh. "Oh, fine. If he- if he really loves you, and will treat you right, then it's fine by me." When Y/N grinned and gave her a hug, Angelica smiled back. "But remember- no boy is good enough for you, Y/N! If he hurts you, I will hurt him!"

Y/N giggled and jumped up and down with Peggy and Eliza, knowing Aaron would never hurt her. She couldn't wait to write to him and tell him the good news.

...

"Help!" Y/N cried, running into her sister's room. Eliza and Angelica were already in the bedroom, sitting on the bed. Peggy raced in after Y/N.

"What's wrong?" Angelica exclaimed in concern.

"Aaron will be in town in a few minutes, and I have nothing to wear!"

The girls burst into laughter, making the youngest Schuyler pout.

"Come on, this is serious!" Y/N said, looking around Eliza's room. "None of my dresses are nice enough, can I borrow something?"

"I have a nice dress that will fit you," Peggy shouted, making the oldest girl scold her. Peggy bolted out of the room and returned with a stunning dress in her arms. Y/N's sisters helped her into the dress- it was f/c, made with silk, simple but elegant.

"It's beautiful," Y/N gasped, picking up the skirts and twirling around with a giggle. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

The girls laughed. "It was made for you," Angelica commented, helping the youngest adjust the bodice and do up the laces. "Let's do your hair."

Within a few minutes, Y/N's hair was brushed and styled, neat and perfect, her dress was wrinkle-free, and her face was lit up with excitement.

"You look radiant," Eliza said happily. "When will he arrive?"

"Any minute now!" Y/N whispered nervously, a smile still on her face. "Come on!"

The girls walked down the stairs and settled by the door.

"You look lovely," their mother exclaimed when her eyes fell on Y/N. "What's the special occasion?"

Y/N grinned, spinning around to show off her dress. "Aaron Burr! He's coming for a visit!"

Their mother forced the young woman to sit down in order to keep her dress and hair neat. However, when there was a sound on the door, she sprung up and rushed to the door. She threw it open instantly, her face bright with a smile.

"Aaron!" she ran into his arms, catching him by surprise.

"You look beautiful," he stammered, eyes wide.

"Y/N!" her mother scolded, folding her arms.

"Sorry," Y/N said sheepishly, backing up from an ecstatic Aaron Burr.

"Miss Y/N, it's lovely to see you," he exclaimed smoothly, taking her hand and kissing it once again. She blushed before he turned to her mother. "Mrs. Schuyer, it's a pleasure to finally meet you!"

"It's an honor to meet you, too, Mr. Burr," her mother told him, gesturing for him to come in. "How long will you be with us?"

Aaron smiled. "I'm just visiting for a few days before I'll be back on the battlefield."

"Well, then, we are honored to have you here."

Y/N laced her hand with Burr's, skipping to her sisters. "You remember Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy?"

"Nice to see you," Burr managed to get out before Y/N dragged him away. They spent the day together, talking and taking walks. Aaron took her on a carriage ride to the village, where they walked around together, hand-in-hand, enjoying the fresh air. When it was time for him to return to the house he was staying at, she frowned.

"Do you have to go?"

"I'm afraid so, Y/N," he said sadly, taking her hand and squeezing it. "Did you have fun?"

"I had the time of my life!" she replied truthfully, smiling at the memory of it. He grinned back.

"I had fun, too. I'll see you tomorrow." With a kiss on the cheek, he was off.

...

"Will you marry me?"

Y/N gasped, placing a hand on her heart. "Yes, Aaron, I will!"

Peggy burst out laughing. "Now you just have to wait for him to propose!" She got up from one knee. "He'll be here soon, right?"

Y/N nodded just as a knock sounded on the door. She opened it with a flourish, immediately stepping out and closing the door behind her.

"Where to now?" she asked happily, reaching for his hand. She was hurt when he didn't take it, but her hurt was quickly replaced by excitement and surprise as he dropped to one knee.

"Y/N, we haven't known each other for very long, but, as long as your father approves, will you marry me?"

"Yes, yes, yes!" she cried, letting him kiss her hand one last time. "I love you, Aaron, I love you more than anything!"

"And I love you, Y/N," he said softly, standing up and pulling her close to him. "I love you more than the sun and the moon, the stars and everything above. I adore you, Y/N."

She closed her eyes, letting herself get lost in the moment, in his hand around her waist, gentle and calm yet firm, as if to make sure she would never leave him, in the sense of peace he gave her. She let herself get lost in him as he pressed his lips so lightly, so sweetly against her own. She lost herself in him, and she loved it.

"I love you," she said, kissing his cheek one last time before they went in. "You're perfect for me."
