It was after school at about 3:15 and I was out on the field with the rest of the girls. We were scrimmaging for our big game tomorrow night. I was doing pretty well until my ball was whacked with a cane by a certain crazy redhead.
"Dinger! Jeez, what are you still doing here? School ended an hour ago, I thought you would've left by now." I said, not even bothering to chase the ball.
"Well I was planning on leaving with Bobby, but then I decided that I wanted to see my favorite girl." He gave me a big smile.
"Aww that's so sweet." I smiled back.
"Yeah, I still haven't found her." He stated with a straight face.
I smacked his arm. "Ugh, you suck Dinger."
"I'm kidding y/n, you know I'll always mean you as my favorite." He laughed.
Dinger and I have been friends since the first grade when he stood up for me as a girl tried to steal my crayons. We've always hung out together but ever since last year, our relationship started to change. Not in a bad way of course, but I sort of started to develop a crush on him. I don't think he'd ever go for me seeing as it would probably ruin our friendship in his eyes, but I can dream a little dream.
"Okay seriously, what are you doing here? I need to practice." I say, still smiling at his presence.
"Okay, you got me. I'm here because..." He suddenly got serious. Uh oh, what's happening? Is this a good thing?
"BECAUSE I WANNA DANCE WITH YOU Y/N!" He shouted, then started dancing in the middle of the field.
Of course it was just a joke. I was sad because I got my hopes up of him actually asking me out, but it was just Dinger being Dinger. I couldn't stay sad with him for long.
"Dinger, stop! You are so embarrassing." I said trying not to laugh at him and my surroundings.
"Embarrassing? I'm embarrassing? Well then sweetheart, maybe I should dance a little more for you. Go even crazier." He laughed maniacally while dancing like a psycho now.
Soon enough, a lot of people were staring at us. Other teams were staring, my team was staring, even my coach was staring. She started walking towards us and I knew it was gonna be trouble.
"Y/n, what is going on? Have you been chit chatting the whole time and not even practicing for the big game? Tell your friend he needs to go so you can prepare." My coach said with a death glare before walking away. Thankfully Dinger stopped dancing when she came over.
I smiled at him with wide eyes. "You see what you do? You got me in big trouble!"
"Ehh she wasn't gonna do anything to us. Besides, you are amazing at soccer, so you don't even need practice." He said seriously, lowering his sunglasses to truly look at me.
I blushed while looking away. I can't let him know I adore him.
"So since I have to leave now, I guess we'll have to finish our dance Saturday." He continued.
I looked up at him so fast I thought I got whiplash.
"Wh-wha you mean like a uh date?" Curse my nerves and this random stutter.
He looked up at the sky and smiled. "Yes of course I mean a date. Look I can tell you like me and if it's not obvious, which Bobby thinks it is, I like you too. So what do you say partner?"
I was so excited for the date till I realized my SAT test is this Saturday.
"I can't on Saturday, I have my SAT that day." I sighed sadly.
"You mean Saturday Afternoon Test?" He asked.
"Nn- what? No! What even? Nevermind." This boy is so confusing.
"Okay, well then what about tomorrow night?" He asked hopefully.
Tomorrow was Thursday.... OH NO! I just remembered my soccer game is tomorrow. So many things preventing me from the date of my life.
"Ughh, tomorrow's my soccer game!" My face was now in my palms.
"Playing hard to get are you y/n?" He questioned, gazing up at me with a smirk.
"No! Why is this happening to me?" So many things were happening. My head was spinning, my face was blushing, I couldn't stop smiling. Overall, I'm surprised I haven't exploded yet.
"Please tell me Friday is good for you?" He was practically begging, but in a joking manner.
"Actually, Friday is perfect! Thank goodness!" He got up and hugged me as we were both so psyched for our date.
"If Bobby was here, he'd say finally." He laughed. "But since it's just me," he kissed my cheek, "I can tell you that I can't wait for our date sweetheart." He whispered into my ear before walking away with his cane.
