The school bathroom mirror is disgusting. It's really dirty and even has gross handprints on it. I'm trying to sort myself out, but I find it difficult to focus with this headache. I'm slightly off balance. I've got a busted lip and the side of my face is red and throbbing; the wet, cool paper towels I'm pressing against my skin aren't really helping at all.
I need ice. Like, desperately. I just can't get any at school without letting a teacher or the nurse know I've been in a fight. Technically, I could say I fell over, but how believable would that be when ten of the penetrators come in all bruised and beat up as well?
I stare back at my reflection in the mirror. The cut on my lip has finally stopped bleeding.
The sound of water dripping from one of the taps echoes against the tiled walls. Then, there's a small sound of sobbing. Faint wailing, coming from somewhere.
Am I hallucinating? Moaning Myrtle, is that you? Have I got a concussion? I'm going insane.
"Is everything okay?" I ask, not sure where or who I'm speaking to.
"I'm fine."
"Bad day?"
The crying stops for a second. Then, there's a deep sniffle. "Yeah."
"I know how that feels. It gets better, though." I'm trying to sound convincing, but even I can hear myself failing miserably. Do things ever really get better?
"Doesn't feel like it." The voice is broken, paper thin.
It almost hurts how much I can relate to this. "I know."
The lock twists on one of the doors. And out comes Iben. Of all people in the world. Really, Satan?
She looks at me, and it's as if she's seen a ghost. It's almost like the tears on her face freeze for a moment. "Eva?"
"Iben?"
"What happened to your face?" she asks. It's funny how she sounds like she almost cares. Who would have thought?
"I got sucker punched by a penetrator."
She looks shocked. I'm not sure if her reaction is real, but if it isn't she pulls it of quite well. "Someone hit you?"
"Something like that. I mean, I don't know who it was or if it was on purpose..."
Once again, she just stops and stares at me. Her mouth opens and closes a few times, as if she's trying to say something but can't get the words out. "I'm so sorry," she finally says, before she rushes out of the bathroom.
