I don’t know how Sloane would react either if I told her. Probably ecstatic, but I don’t want to tell her until I’m one hundred percent sure. I hand in my essay, and I sit down in my seat. Sadly Bridget is in this class, and I have to pretend I don’t see her staring at me. She keeps puckering her lips at me, freaking me out.
I can’t believe Bridget’s still at this. When the teacher turns around to write something on the board, she throws a piece of paper at me. I won’t read it, I refuse to. If I read it though, will she leave me alone? I get an idea, and when she looks again at me, I rip her letter into pieces, and let them fall to the ground. Her mouth opens wide in disbelief, and then she turns around, making a noise of disgust.
Finally! When the bell rings, and a few classes later, it’s lunch. I text Wendy to let her know I’m waiting for her by the front door of the cafeteria. I wait ten minutes, but she never shows up. I text her again. No answer. I head to the library, and eat in there while I do my homework. I’m not going to look like an idiot and waste my whole lunch period waiting for her.
When the bell rings, I go to class, and then I go to the class that I share with Wendy. She’s there, but she looks distracted. I go up to her, giving her a half annoyed half worried look. She looks up at me, and apologizes. “I’m stressed out. My mom called, she thinks her water is going to break any day now. I don’t know if I can do this.”
I pat her shoulder. “You’ll be fine. Remember, we’re the ones that will get killed if anything.”
“That’s not funny,” Wendy says. “I feel bad for what I’m doing. You think I like you three sacrificing yourselves for Hope and I? You three have a lot to lose too-“
“Don’t worry, we’ll be okay. If we think we’re going to die, we’ll bail.”
We both laugh uneasy, and then I return to my seat right before the teacher walks in. I hear Wendy’s phone go off, and she checks it quickly. She turns around and stares at Bridget, her eyebrows wrinkling. She glances at me, and then back at Bridget.
I shake my head, and then try to concentrate on what the teacher is saying, but Wendy’s phone keeps going off. Bridget’s doing it to irritate me.
I grab a piece of paper and write a note to Wendy, telling her to turn her phone off. I drop it to the ground, and slide it with my foot. It hits her foot. She glances down, and when the teacher looks down at his worksheet, she picks it up swiftly. She glances at it, and then snickers. She takes her phone, and holds down the button to turn it off. I hear Bridget huff, and then copy what the board says.
Class continues, and then, a few classes later, the bell rings, signaling the end of the school day. I meet Wendy outside of the school building, and when she appears, Kara is at her side.
“What do you mean you’re quitting cheer?” Kara says loudly, her hands on her hips.
Wendy stops walking and turns around to stare down Kara. “I said I don’t care about silly stuff like that anymore. I have better things to do than throw a pompom around and support this pointless school.”
Kara turns red. “This means a lot to me, and to say to your best friend that it’s silly, well maybe you should go find another best friend.”
Wendy turns around, rolling her eyes as she walks over to me. Kara’s face crumples up, and she runs back into the school building. When Wendy is next to me, I can see a bit of guilt rising on her face. “I know I’m probably never going to see her again soon, and she doesn’t know the real me, but we’re still best friends, and for that, I feel bad.”
I don’t have good advice when it comes to “girl talk” but Wendy is my friend, so I tell her not to worry about it. She tells me she’ll meet me at headquarters. We both decide to drive the long way to headquarters since the secret agents seem to want to kill everyone on the other road.
