"Oh my God, more skip tracers? What, were they having a freaking convention? You realise what would have happened if we'd been caught, don't you?" Chubs railed. "And they were shooting at us! Shooting! With a gun!". I couldn't help but giggle at Chubs' dramatic nature. "Well, I'm glad you find it funny!" Chubs told me. "Do you know what happens when you get shot, Suzume? The bullet rips through—"
"Chubs!" Liam cut him off before he could destroy my childhood even more,"Settle down, okay? We're fine. That was a little bit closer than I would have liked, but still. We'll just have to try to make better mistakes tomorrow, right, Zu?". Naturally I agreed with Liam as he always agreed with me. I feel like we made a mental pact to always go against what Chubs said. "I'm sorry about before," Liam said apologetically. "Next time I'll go with you to get food. You're not hurt, right?". I always enjoyed doing anything with Liam so I didn't mind.
"Did it sound like they were looking for someone to you?" Liam asked. Okay despite out mental pact Liam. Nope. Nope. Nope. They weren't looking for anyone I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. "No, it sounded like they were shooting at us!" Chubs replied raising his voice. Thank you Chubs I thought. We drove ahead with Liam and Chubs discussing something about East River and I just silently placed my head on my hand looking out the window.
Then when I felt like I could start thinking about getting the supposed Ruby out the car unnoticed Liam looked into the rearview mirror and said something that almost gave me a heart attack."I can't see out of the back window when you—" His words choked off as he did a double take. Black Betty spun to the right as Liam tried to get a better look at the girl. Chubs let out a weird noise I didn't want to think about for too long. I turned around surprised that she emerge but also kinda scared. Liam slammed the breaks all of us getting stopped by the seatbelt's. Well all of us except the supposed Ruby. Now probably definite Ruby. Both Liam and Chubs started in shock with completely different expressions. Both of them in shock they didn't seem to realise she tried to escape. "Zu!" Liam cried out. I just gave hime the hey don't look at me expression and shrugged. Liam continued to look back and forth between us like a confused puppy. Chubs seem to brought him back to reality.
"We all agreed—no strays." Chubs said annoyed, "That's why we didn't take the kittens!"
"Oh, for the love of..." Liam slumped down in his seat, pressing his face into his hands. "What were we going to do with a box of abandoned kittens?". As Liam and Chubs proceeded to argue about the box of kittens we found. I looked over at our new passenger who had a look of pure amazement as they completely seemed to forget that she existed.
"Excuse me!" she interrupted, slamming her palm against the window. "Can you please unlock the door?". OH HELL NO! I did all of that and you want to leave. I'm tired of being the only girl in the car. I also felt a bit guilty. Maybe she didn't want to come along. The boys shut up and Liam looked over to her "Are you the one they were looking for?" he asked. "Ruth?". "Ruby," Chubs corrected. Liam waved his hand. "Right. Ruby".
"Just unlock the door, please!" Ruby said pulling on the door handle trying to get out again, "I made a mistake. This was a mistake! I was selfish, I know that, so you have to let me go before they catch up". "Before who catches up? Skip tracers?" Liam asked. "Did you just come from a camp?". I looked at her horrified. A camp. That explained so much, but I felt so bad for her. First time out and she gets trapped by a bunch of teens.
"And you ran away from them?" Liam pressed looking at me for confirmation and I nodded admitting to actually knowing something about the extra passenger in the car. "What does that have to do with anything?" Chubs interrupted. "You heard her—unlock the stupid door! We already have PSFs and skip tracers after us; we don't need to add the League to the list! They probably think we took her, and if they put in the call that there are freaks roaming around in a beat-up black minivan". "Hey," Liam said gesturing protectively to Chubs, "don't talk about Black Betty that way."
"Oh, excuse me for hurting the feelings of a twenty-year-old minivan."
"He's right," Ruby said. "I'm sorry, please—I don't want any more trouble for you."
"You want to go back to them?" Liam asked Ruby facing her. "Listen, it's none of my business, Green, but you have the right to know that whatever lies they fed you probably aren't true. They aren't our angel network. They have their own agenda, and if they plucked you out of camp, it means they have a plan for you."
"You think I don't know that?" She tried to reply.
"Okay," he replied in a calm voice. "Then why are you in such a hurry to get back?"
"No, but I can't—I didn't mean to drag you into—I mean, I did mean to, but..." She tried to say. I felt bad and tried to reach for her, but she jerked away. I didn't want to show that her action hurt me a bit, but I wasn't too good at hiding emotions.
"Do you want to go back to them?" Liam asked Ruby looking at her. Chubs also stared, but at Liam with a slightly horrified expression.
"No," she replied, "I don't."
He didn't say anything, only shifted the minivan out of park. I was glad he didn't unlock the door. His expression turned back to the usual calm one replacing the concerned one. The van rolled forward. "Lee, don't you dare," Chubs began. "If the League comes after us". "It'll be okay," Liam said. "We're just taking her to the nearest bus station". Nearest bus station? I don't think so. I saw it in Liam's eye's that he wanted to help her as well. "You don't have to." Ruby started saying blinking surprised. Liam waved her off. "It's fine. Sorry we can't do more. Can't risk it". "Yes, you're right," Chubs said. "So explain to me why we aren't taking her to one of the train stations, which are closer?". I noticed Liam was studying Ruby, but he ignored Chubs and instead said "Remind me again—Ruby, right? I'm sure you've caught on by now, but I'm Liam, the lovely lady behind me is Suzume".
I smiled at her shyly turning to look out the window repressing their conversation. Crap. There was an SUV following us. I could feel my lips part and the colour drain from my face. "Zu?" Liam asked. "What's wrong?". I didn't have to point it out they all saw for themselves. This day was going to become even more difficult. As a bullet hit Black Betty's back window and glass shattered around us I knew this was just the beginning.
