runaway - aurora
~

the sound of a camera clicking filled the rooftop with sound as the calm of the night was briefly hindered. dan was settled on the edge of a building's roof which over looked the city; it was dark and auroral lights escaped from spiting skyscrapers in front of him. a late summer's wind rippled through the trees flanking the illuminated building, on which the small, hazel eyed boy was perched. the breeze was warm and by some means comforting as it shifted dan's dark amber fringe away from his forehead before gently laying it back down, slightly tousled.

a church's clock chimed in the distance, almost out of earshot but still crystal clear as it signalled six pm. dan got to his feet, daintily grazing his fingertips over the material of his shirt, trying to flatten out any creases that had fabricated in the time he'd been sitting.

while the moon slowly faded into sight, the sun began its departure, melting into the deep cerulean ocean and leaving behind a sky of indigo and fuchsia. as the whirlpool of colours intertwined, they fashioned rare shades which enchanted those that set their eyes on the bleeding sky. dan was no exception. he stood, captivated in wonder, gazing at the vibrant scene unfolding before him.

shadows, cast from the emerald leaves, were dancing in the diminishing sunlight, telling the sweet boy to return home; it was almost dark.

clasping his camera, dan tore his eyes away from the sunset and made his way over to the silver door at the corner of the plateaued rooftop.

delicate hands placed the camera's strap around a thin neck and then reached for the greasy handle, grasping stiffly and opening the door. the boy jumped when he stepped inside, hearing the loud thud behind him as the door slammed shut.

red light shone down on dan, glaring at him as the walls around the staircase seemed to shrink. his footsteps echoed. his heartbeat almost matched time with a cheetah at full speed. and although, logically, dan knew that there was no-one behind him, he still whirled his dizzy head around to check: sighing when all he found was an empty staircase gazing back at him. the boy's eyes followed his own footsteps as he peered through the gaps in the metal staircase while his small hands lightly ran over the cold railing at the side.

he picked up the pace at which he was travelling down the stairs to a slight run. his light shirt lifted up and allowed a cool breeze to pass over his chest before a modest shiver crept over his body, despite it being mild enough to allow for a swim in the ocean. dan silently let out a breath which he hadn't known to be holding when he reached the base of the building.

the bustling streets were aglow with the faces of every passer by, thousands of hearts beating independently but somewhat as a whole. tens of mouths shared different stories and ears listened to the sounds of the busy night. dan quietly stepped onto the pavement, slipping into the masses of people which were flowing, like liquid gold, as one through the boulevards and avenues.

the small boy was a mere insect in comparison to the intimidating stature of a brawny man, hence he was jostled with ease amongst the crowds, his slender body lost, as he began to make his way home.

it's gonna be a really loose plot bc i'm shite at keeping an actual storyline together so uhhh

also i think i might do a lil song thing at the start that sorta fits the mood of the chapter, i kinda like the idea
