"I didn't even think about Kirstie being a part of this. She is probably going to freak when she finds out if she doesn't already know from our parents gossiping." Mitch frowned at Scott when he sighed heavily and leaned back on his heels. He walked over to him and placed a hand on his cheek. "What's wrong?" Maybe it's the same thing he could see in him from earlier.
Scott looked up into concerned eyes and covered the hand on his cheek with his own. "Maybe, you were right. We shouldn't be lying to our parents like this."
Mitch pursed his lips and tugged Scott's hand to get him to stand. "What changed your mind between yesterday night and now?" Scott didn't reply, just flicked his eyes between Mitch's. "You said it yourself yesterday, Connie would be crushed to find out that we've been faking it. Why don't you want to follow through and "break up" in a couple weeks like you said?"
"Mitch, it doesn't matter if we break up now or in two weeks or in two years, our parents will still be crushed. That story, our love story, and what you said about it, that it was just meant to be, we can't come back from that easily." Mitch closed his eyes at Scott's words and took a deep breath. He was right, Mitch might've gone a little overboard there, but isn't that what Scott wanted? The look in his eyes after he said that made it seem like that is what he wanted to hear, but really, neither of them could handle lying like this to their parents. His eyes opened to Scott's face scrunched in frustration.
"I know, I know. I understand I shouldn't have said that, but what do we do now? If you want to call it off, then maybe we should." Why was this starting to feel like a real break up? Mitch's heart ached.
"I..." Scott was at a loss for words, Mitch actually seemed disappointed they weren't following through. A spark of hope coursed through him. Mitch looked sad and all Scott wanted to do was to squeeze him, so he did. He pulled Mitch to his chest and wrapped him up tightly, swaying him slowly and buried his face in his neck. "We should follow through. I'm just nervous this is going to get us in trouble in the long run."
"It'll be okay, Scott." Mitch's voice was muffled by Scott's shirt and he leaned back and resituated his arms around Scott's neck. "We will be okay."
"Okay," Scott said after a moment and slowly swayed them back and forth. A small smile graced his lips and Mitch couldn't help but smile back. He kept his exterior cool as Mitch leaned up and pressed a lingering kiss to his cheek, then his jaw, then the corner of his mouth, but his heart was going crazy. There wasn't an audience to convince but Mitch was intent on staying "in character" apparently.
Mitch pulled out of Scott's reach and turned to the bed. "We should go to sleep, baby. It's getting pretty late." Scott's ears perked up at the pet name and he smiled wide at the tease.
"I'll be there in a sec, sweetie." Mitch's teasing eyes met Scott's before he turned to the bathroom to get ready for bed.
***
Scott lay wide awake facing a peacefully sleeping Mitch. Their legs were tangled and noses barely touching, Mitch's little puffs of air brushing against Scott's mouth. He licked his lips and flexed his body, unintentionally pulling Mitch's body a little tighter against his own. His fingers drew barely-there figure eights on Mitch's lower back, and his eyes dropped closed, content to be wrapped up in his best friend.
As sad as it was, this was all he's ever wanted. He wasn't lying before, about regretting not telling Mitch how he felt that night. But they were best friends, sisters if you will, and that was a line that they couldn't cross. But now, the line seemed to blur so much that Scott's heart was seriously confused. Yeah, he felt really bad about lying to his parents but in reality, he wasn't sure his own heart and psyche could handle their "break up".
