Koa was laughing at her, and Izzie didn't appreciate it at all.
Izzie turned away from the laughing old woman and shoved a piece of the orange the woman had just peeled for her into her mouth and grumbled unhappily. It had been two days since Alexander had taken her jewelry and four hours since Koa had been able to coax her out of her room.
"Its not funny, Koa!" Izzie finally said loudly, sick of the woman laughing over the pot of whatever she was cooking. "Your grandson is evil." She could feel herself pouting.
Koa turned to face her, unable to wipe the smile from her wrinkled but beautiful face. She held out a wooden spoon with meaty sauce on the edge, wordlessly asking her to taste it. Izzie, though mad, didn't hesitate to taste the woman's cooking. Koa was the best cook she knew.
Nodding her head with a brief smile, she told the woman it was good wordlessly. Koa smiled brightly, which made Izzie feel a bit better, despite the woman laughing at her, she was relived to see the older woman smile again. It had been awhile.
Koa brushed a curl behind Izzie's ear and eyes full of so much fondness, Izzie was a bit taken aback. "You hadn't even been with us long and Henric managed to spoil you rotten in record time." It took Izzie a moment to comprehend the woman's words.
"I am not spoiled!" Izzie sighed, dropping her half eaten orange in favor of covering her face in exasperation.
Koa laughed again, making Izzie drop her hands and look at her. The old woman nodded down to the orange on the island top where she sat. "Oh?"
Izzie winced. Okay... maybe having someone else peel your orange isn't a very good example of not being spoiled. But...she's always hated peeling oranges, so messy, and she's not good at it and always dug to deep. Her shoulders slumped. She might be spoiled...just a little.
"Fine...but what does me maybe being spoiled have to do with him taking my jewelry? I apologized for not coming to his stupid meeting!" She reached for her orange and placed another piece into her mouth.
"I think he just wants to show you that he's not going to put up with your antics." Koa shrugged. Izzie narrowed her eyes. Antics? She doesn't have antics. She didn't think. "He is right though, Izzie." The woman said a little more serious. "An Alpha's word is supposed to be law, for everyone's safety." Izzie didn't bother commenting on that, mostly because Alexander wasn't her Alpha. She kept that to herself. "Anyway, Alexander is looking out for our pack, which is why he's making so many changes."
Izzie scoffed. "I hope one of the changes isn't a shirt ban."
Koa laughed again, louder this time. "I do wish he would wear a shirt more often." The woman agreed, much to Izzie's pleasure. "But, I don't think that is one of his changes. I mean, Henric... I loved him dearly, but he believed women kind were to be protected. Self-defense was the most training he offered for shewolves. But, Alexander seems to see shewolves as capable of combat and able to be a part of the ranks. I feel..." Koa looked down, thoughts clearly dark, "I feel as if Henric had adopted such a way of thinking then the battle would have had a different outcome. A...better one."
Izzie's heart broke for the woman and her own sadness was starting to creep in. She shook her head slightly and took in a breath. "What is that? Its really good," Izzie complimented. "I don't think you've ever made that before."
Koa seemed to fight off her funk and smiled lightly. "Yes, you see this is my secret stew, it also happens to be Alexander's favorite meal. I haven't cooked since his arrival, I decided this would be the first meal I'll cook him." She turned back to the cooking pot and stirred the contents. "I can show you and tell you my ingredients, if you want." Koa said, tone oddly innocent. Izzie couldn't understand why.
