Boomer
It was raining this morning and I lazily got out of bed. Brick and Butch were still asleep along with the rest of the house. I got dressed pretty quickly and made my way downstairs. The kitchen was illuminated by the street lights and the mess on the counters of school lunches and homework. I went to get a sandwich and could faintly see my name written on the chalkboard that took up most of the refrigerator.
It was Nakamura’s handwriting. She had written out all our names with ice cream flavors listed or questions marks. She really is serious about this. I thought to myself remember the previous night I spent talking to her. It was heartwarming in a way. I scribbled down flavors next to my name, Butch and Brick, and washed the remaining dishes that were in the sink. I didn't do anything special but I created less work. With no time wasted I grabbed an umbrella from by the door and made my way to school.
The walk was quiet and unsurprisingly fast since there was no early morning clutter. I entered through the side gate and of course the school was empty. I absentmindedly wandered to the same room I spent my morning with Miyako in. It was unlocked but empty only full of storage. I walked carefully to the art room which had its lights on and I carefully peered in and could make out two female voices.
“It's good to have you back at wor-” the speaker stopped and the room went silent. I wanted to open the door more to look but as soon as I did I landed face first on the ground. “A no good peeping Tom.”
“Minato?” the other voice called out
“M-Miyako?!” I stammered standing up “I-I swear I wasn't-”
“You know him Miyako?” the first girl asked sitting on the table.
“Yes we volunteer together.” Miyako replied.
The girl stared at me and cracked a sly smile. “Blond hair, blue eyes, freckles on his face. Miyako this wouldn't happen to be the familiar cute boy you told me asked you for directions, would he?”
It took her a minute to process but once she did Miyako’s face lit up. “Don't say things like that!” she buried her face in her hands.
The girl turned back to me. “Nice to meet you cutie! My name's Yamamoto Akiko.”
“Nice to meet you. My name's Minato.” I replied
“Rude.” she scoffed in a joking manner
“Yeah my Dad's kinda a jackass so I'm registered under my foster mother's name, Nakamura.”
“Oh I'm sorry.”
“Don't be.” I smiled
“Aww he is a sweetheart! Just like you told me Miyako!” Kiko smiled while Miyako buried her face even further.
“You suck.” she muttered
Akiko was a name I heard fondly around Miyako and I could see why. She was extroverted, cared about Miyako and seemed to keep her company in the scare time Kaoru or Momoko weren't around. Something about this situation was still off putting to me.
The morning bell wrung and I stayed behind Miyako as we walked Akiko to class. Miyako suggested we study at her house and Akiko agreed.
The school day rolled over fast and I sat outside by the gate waiting for them both. Soon Miyako came out Akiko nowhere in sight. She didn't say much and insisted that we start walking saying “Kiko-Chan was busy, she'll catch up.”
At that point I realized why Akiko’s presence was off putting to me. I didn't want to pressure Miyako on it since she look tired, actually more tired than usual. “Miyako you want me to carry you?”
