“Mavis?”

I had just opened the hotel room door, and I immediately heard the squeaking of a mattress and a shuffle.

Mavis stood in front of me in second flat, her hair in a sloppy bun on top of her head, her face uncharacteristically devoid of makeup, making her look like a teenager. “Oh my God, Analeigh! Where the hell have you been? I almost called the cops!”

“I’m sorry,” I said, tossing my bag down onto the desk and shrugging out of my kimono, which was significantly less comfortable after its dip into the ocean. “I spent the night with my sister, I didn’t think to call you.”

She looked at me sternly. “You’re supposed to stay at the hotel every night while the Voice airs. You know that.”

“I know,” I sighed. “It’s just weird, staying in a hotel in your own city.”

Mavis was calming down, slowly. “I get it. Just next time, shoot me a text so I know you aren’t dead, okay?”

“Deal,” I agreed. I grabbed my phone out of my bag and stuck it into a charger. “You ready for your Knockout meeting?”

She nodded, immediately smiling broadly. “I really hope Adam likes my song choice.”

“I’m sure he will,” I said. “If you’re passionate about it, I’m sure he will be, too.”

“I hope so,” she sighed. “So what about you? Have you figured out your song?”

I nodded, thinking back to the conversation Adam and I had. “I was thinking maybe ‘Sweater Weather’. You know, that song by the Neighbourhood.”

Mavis gave a little jump. “Oh my gosh, perfect song for your voice!”

“Here’s hoping,” I said, giving a little laugh. “Well, hey, I’m going to jump in the shower and then we’ll get ready to hop on the bus, okay?”

“Sounds good. Wear something hot, maybe you’ll see Daniel!”

I laughed. “Whatever you say.”

I couldn’t tell her that if I was going to be dressing sexily, it would not be for Daniel.

I left her to go take my shower, and when I got all of the sand off of my feet and saltwater out of my hair I started picking through my clothes. I went for a really girly look, wearing a short, cream-colored lace dress and a bright red blazer over top. I curled my hair and pulled it into a sharp high ponytail, and then slipped on some tan colored wedges before realizing I only had ten minutes before I needed to leave. I threw on some makeup, knowing that if I was completely hideous the Voice makeup team would just fix me up at the building. Then Mavis and I grabbed our things and headed out the door, ready for the day ahead.

When we got to the Voice building, we were all immediately split up into our respective teams. For the first time, I got to take a full look at the rest of Team Adam.

There were eight remaining contestants. There was me and Mavis. There was a folky duo named Zack and Paige, who had charmed everyone with an adorable rendition of Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran’s “Everything Has Changed” for their audition. A scarily good country singer named Thomas who somehow managed to get Adam to turn for him but not Blake. A forty-year-old woman named Lana who sang Whitney Houston just about as good as Whitney Houston. A twenty-seven year old Beyonce wannabe named Natasha who made it through her Battle out of pure luck and no small amount of sex appeal. A really timid but kind of adorable seventeen-year-old girl named Ally who had a sweet voice but not a lot of stage presence. And then there was Evan Matheson, the college football athlete turned hardcore rocker who had captivated screaming girls everywhere.
